They will have the ability to influence the formulation of business and corporate strategies and shape regulatory policy. Why study environmental economics at Strathclyde rather than anywhere else? Our market research shows that very few economists are employed exclusively as environmental economics. However, dealing with environmental issues is a large and growing part of the job of most economists. Employers are looking for applicants with the abilities to work well in teams, interact with profesionals from many disciplines, solve problems and to give practical policy-relevant advice. They are also looking for well-rounded economists, who have good skills across all major areas of economics and are quantitatively highly adept. These are exactly the kinds of skills that the MSc EMP programme is building. We know of no other institution that does so. Our strengths in the Department : Programme staff are

The article by Albers examines traditional forest management models in jungle and tropical rain forests and compares with the spatial-intertemporal model . The enhanced economic possibilities created by using a spatial-intertemporal model which considers ecological factors are discussed. The model includes static and dynamic economic information to develop more effective patterns of income-producing land uses. In Westley and Vredenburg's article, they discuss a zoo management case study conducted at one zoo and their experience. The evolution of the zoo from a place of entertainment and amusement park for visitors to a modern scientific institution concerned with conservation and education is reviewed. They look at how zoos have changed. Today, zoos are rated according to the quality of their exhibits and their contribution to conservation. The authors write about how one

Ecology, Economics and Policy With help from Nancy Bergeron, Michael Jaspin, Daniel Kramer, Christian Langpap, Steve Pavich, Christian Vossler Dedicated to the memory of Suzanne Szentandrasi Welcome to the biodiversity bibliography. We have found it useful to collect these references for our own work and we are glad to share our efforts with others. This bibliography contains approximately 4000 references on various aspects of biodiversity and conservation. No pretense is made of complete coverage of all the relevant literature. Certain areas that closely match our interests are well covered (e.g., various aspects of economics, reserve site selection) while other topics are not. The bibliography uses Procite bibliographic software, which allows web-users to conduct searches using a general word search in all indexed fields (such as author and year) on the initial search page. Users can also search all non-indexed fields (such as title and abstracts) using the advanced search feature. Recent articles have abstracts included. Many older articles do not. All articles either have abstracts or are keyed to a set of categories, which can be accessed using keywords. A list of these keywords is given below. If you would like a pdf file containing all the articles within a keyword category, please select the links below. We welcome your input and suggestions. If you have references you would like us to add, suggestions or question, please send them to Daniel Kramer (kram0090@tc.umn.edu). It would be most helpful when sending references to send them in one of the following formats: a Procite format; MEDLARS; or RIS (Research Informations System).

    The Project
The aim of the "needs and limits" initiative is to help humankind reverse ecological overshoot and to achieve sustainable well-being.
This shift requires that we radically alter the way we determine key economic outcomes such as production quantities, resource and waste flows, and population levels. For most economies today, these outcomes arise spontaneously from the logic of capitalism, which is rooted in corporate profits and manipulated consumer wants. The approach suggested here is to replace this logic with one based on human needs and natural limits, and to derive economic objectives explicitly from these new principles.

The IEA mourns the passing of Dr. Anthony Lumby.
    Mission
The Interdisciplinary Environmental Association (IEA) is an organization of academics, practitioners, and concerned citizens from a wide range of disciplines and perspectives who believe that environmental problems require an interdisciplinary approach that needs to be clearly reflected in an organization dedicated to enhancing the discussion of these issues across disciplinary and political boundaries. The mission of the IEA is thus to bring together all disciplines so that environmental knowledge is enhanced though interdisciplinary communications. The goals of the organization are to enhance understanding of environmental issues by educating each other in an interdisciplinary format, and to present disciplinary perspectives of environmental problems to people outside those disciplines, as well as to those outside academia, in a clear, understandable fashion.

Excerpts from the book by Susan Meeker-Lowry.
    http://www.progressiveliving.org/eerm_samples.htm
Economics as if the Earth Really Mattered
    by Susan Meeker-Lowry
A Progressive Living Book Review Representative Quotations
Mission Statement "This book is primarily a handbook for action. "Our economic system often feels distant and impersonal, one of the givens of our lives. We live within its constraints, feel subject to its changes, and think we have little hope of affecting it. (Even the experts claim with increasing frequency that they don't know what's going on.) "I believe, however, that we can affect our economy, both locally and as a whole. I am convinced because I've spent the last five years learning about, meeting, and writing in Catalyst about the many people who are working to transform our economic system into one that is more sustainable, just, and life-affirming. The projects and possibilities these people are working on are the subject of this book." Samples "The key to affecting our economy is to consciously choose to apply our values to economic interactions. If we do not choose our own values, then we subscribe by default to the values of the prevalent system. Such acquiescence is always dangerous, but these days it's also suicidal. Business as usual is killing the Earth, the source of all life." "Thanks to our communication technologies, it is more and more difficult for us to pretend that starvation, acute poverty, and environmental degradation do not exist. As I examined them, it became clearer that these situations are a direct result of a global economy characterized by materialist values and inadequate methods of evaluating its own effects. Indeed, our economy and our culture are based on separations—from the Earth, from other peoples, from each other, from ourselves. Even the efforts designed to ease these situations often ignore the reality of people's lives on the community level."
