It exerts influence on a large range of disciplines including law sociology theology economics ... ecology and geography There are many ethical decisions that human beings make with respect to the environment. For example:
  • Should we continue to clear cut forests for the sake of human consumption? Should we continue to propagate? Should we continue to make gasoline powered vehicles What environmental obligations do we need to keep for future generations? Is it right for humans to knowingly cause the extinction of a species for the convenience of humanity?
The academic field of environmental ethics grew up in response to the work of scientists such as Rachel Carson and events such as the first Earth Day in 1970, when environmentalists started urging philosophers to consider the philosophical aspects of environmental problems. Two papers published in Science had a crucial impact:

Environmental Ethics
October 07, 2010
Trying to get to the bigger moral picture
in the New York Times has provoked a lot of discussion (including two pieces here). He argued that just as it is bad for animals to suffer at the hands of humans, so is it bad when they suffer in the wild. Moreover, since there are vastly more animals in the wild than in captivity, this might be a much bigger issue. McMahan illustrated the problem by suggesting that if there were some way to eliminate carnivorous animals from the planet without messing up the ecosystem (a big if), then it would be very important that we do so. This example was presumably designed to show how the moral claim that it is bad for so many animals to suffer could be made practical, but it ended up muddying the issue a lot, as many people focused on this hypothetical rather than the big issue. It developed out of three insights: first, that ethics cannot be built without the consideration of natural beings, nature, or the Earth because all beings on Earth are interconnected; second, that the scope of ethics should include future consequences, and so ethics should have an inter-generational outlook; third, that proper ethics cannot be built without recognizing that human life is only possible given the proper condition of the Earth. While traditional ethics had an exclusive focus on human beings, environmental ethics is based on concern for nature. Environmental ethics often contains criticisms of man's abusive or exploitative practices with regard to nature. Some theories argue for the intrinsic value and rights of natural beings, while others argue from an anthropocentric utilitarian perspective. Furthermore, some theories contain critical examinations of human nature, modernity

Jump to: navigation search Environmental ethics is the part of environmental philosophy which considers the ethical relationship between human beings and the natural environment, according to the Wikipedia definition (28 February 2007). This article will attempt to describe environmental ethics from the perspective of Orthodox theology, by exploring patristic and contemporary thought together with scriptural and liturgical evidence regarding a theology of creation. In order to present the theological foundation of environmental ethics, we begin by examining the place of material creation within the whole of created order. From that foundation, we continue with theological consideration of the relationship between man and material creation, and conclude with some practical aspects of this relationship.

The Issue of Environmental Professional Ethics
Does the engineer, scientist, or other technical individual who works on issues of impacts of chemical contaminants on public health or the environment, have a fundamental ethical and professional obligation to tell the whole truth? The obvious and undeniable answer is "yes, of course." Why, then, this paper?
The role of engineers, scientists, and other technically educated/trained individuals in project-advocacy and adversarial proceedings on behalf of clients or employers has increased dramatically in the environmental field over the past decades.
The field of environmental quality evaluation and management has become immersed in the adversarial (legal) system for "resolving disputes" among parties with different interests. In many cases, in the balance is protection of public health; resolution of "disputes" often is tantamount to "negotiating" the degree of public health protection that will be provided. The traditional engineering/scientific approach and the adversarial system approach toward addressing complex environmental issues are significantly different. In the adversarial system it is the responsibility of "one side" to present only the strongest possible technical discussion on behalf of the client; it is left to the "other side" to bring out and discuss the weaknesses in the opponent's technical position.

According to Marshall, over the last 65 million years there has been a natural ecological balance between the animate and the inanimate. However, over the last 300 years rapid industrialisation has led to a massive imbalance. ENVIRONMENTAL ETHICS TODAY
Today growing concerns about global warming (the effects of which global dimming, until now, has lead to a gross underestimation) underline the general acceptance that environmental preservation is an obligation both for present and future generations. However, it is the grounds upon which justifies the argument for or against preservation that is the subject of ethical debate, and this invariably includes the issue of non-human animal and non-animal rights. There have been many attempts to categorize the different approaches to the justification of environmental preservation. Alan Marshall and Michael Smith are two recent examples, as cited by Peter Vardy in ‘The Puzzle of Ethics.’

Keller for the 2003 Association for Practical and Professional Ethics (APPE) Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl. Reprinted with permission of APPE.] The goal of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is to increase trade between the United States, Canada and Mexico. Since NAFTA took effect in January 1994, less restrictive standards for Mexican trucks entering the U.S. have significantly increased cross-boarder traffic. For example, the Environmental Protection Agency reports that truck traffic through Texas has increased 17% since the passage of NAFTA. This increasing number of trucks entering the U.S. from Mexico has sparked controversy on environmental and economic issues.

Environmental ethics is a relatively new field of study that for the most part goes unnoticed by most people in the world. This field was introduced in the early 1970’s and posed new questions against the accepted anthropocentric viewpoint. The first thing questioned was the moral superiority of humans. Next, non-humans were first thought to have an intrinsic value of their own. These ideas led to the thoughts of conserving natural resources not only because it affected human beings directly, but for nature’s sake itself. Even more recent was the introduction of theories to help motivate people to be more aware of their impact on the environment.
There are many theories about what led to western society having such an anthropocentric view about the environment. Lynn White Jr.’s theory is that Judeo-Christian thinking encouraged the overexploitation of nature by maintaining human superiority over nature was given to us by God. Deep ecology states that all natural things have intrinsic value and should not be damaged for any reason. The feminist theory is that male dominance is the root of sexism, racism, class exploitation, and ecological destruction. All theories have one type of solution and that’s non-anthropocentrism (Boothe, 2009).

Home Library Philosophy Dictionary Most ethics deals with problems of human desires and needs: the achievement of happiness, or the distribution of goods. The central problem specific to thinking about the environment, is the independent value to place on such things as preservation of species, or protection of the wilderness. Such protection can be supported as a means to ordinary human ends, for instance when animals are regarded as future sources of medicines or other benefits. But many would want to claim a non-utilitarian, absolute value for the existence of wild things and wild places; it is in their very independence of human lives that their value consists. They put us in our proper place, and failure to appreciate this value is not only an aesthetic failure but one of due humility and reverence, a moral disability. The problem is one of expressing this value, and mobilizing it against utilitarian arguments for developing natural areas and exterminating species more or less at will. Environmental Ethics
The words environment and ethics are not commonly found together in a sentence. However, in today’s global environment, environmental ethics have become a required practice for everyone in the world. Creating effective strategies for protecting the environment often brings ethical issues to the forefront. When confronted with the issues of how to get rid of hazardous waste, air or water pollution , ethics play a major role in the decision when there is an absence of laws to governor the issue.
Ethics are the body of principles or standards of human conduct that govern the behavior of individuals and groups (Bazerman and Messick 52). Ethics arise not simply from man's creation but from human nature itself making it a natural body of law from which man's laws follow. Good ethics allow one to do what is right in the absence of written rules or guidelines.
Environmental ethics have no precisely fixed conventional definition in glossaries or dictionary terminology. However, Aldo Leopold is universally recognized as the father or founding genius of the recent environmental ethics (Bazerman and Messick 187). His land ethic has become a modern classic and may be treated as the standard example of environmental eth
