22. Environmental Ethics
The site considers environmental ethics that govern human relationships with the natural world. What ethical responsibilites and obligations do we have to the natural world?
http://daphne.palomar.edu/calenvironment/ethics.htm
Does the Earth exist for the benefit of humanity? Do humans have any ethical obligations with respect to the natural world? Have we the right to take all the Earth's resources for our own use? Do we have a responsibility to be good stewards over the Earth? Do other species have an intrinsic right to exist? Do trees have legal standing? What do various religions have to say about humanity's relationship to the rest of the living world? These and similar questions are addressed in the study of environmental ethics. Also referenced here is a page on environmental backlash, with information on various movements that take the viewpoint that environmentalists are too extreme, and the Earth is meant to be used by humans. The material in this section has general application, not restricted to the California environment as the rest of this site is.
  • The Tragedy of the Commons. This is the full text of the famous article by Garrett Hardin, on the dilemmas involved in the use of common resources. The land ethic : one approach to the question of our relationship with the natural world was put forth by Aldo Leopold , a forester, wildlife manager, professor, conservationist, and author, who said that we as a society accept that we have ethical obligations to other individuals, and to society as a whole, and that the next stage for society was to develop a land ethic, which would affirm our ethical obligation to the land. He said that we need to enlarge "the boundaries of the community to include the soils, waters, plants, and animals, or collectively, the land...A land ethic changes the role of Homo sapiens from conqueror of the land-community to plain member and citizen of it. It implies respect for his fellow members, and also respect for the community as such" (From

Environmental Ethics
The field of environmental ethics concerns human beings’ ethical relationship with the natural environment. While numerous philosophers have written on this topic throughout history, environmental ethics only developed into a specific philosophical discipline in the 1970s. This emergence was no doubt due to the increasing awareness in the 1960s of the effects that technology, industry, economic expansion and population growth were having on the environment. The development of such awareness was aided by the publication of two important books at this time. Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring , first published in 1962, alerted readers to how the widespread use of chemical pesticides was posing a serious threat to public health and leading to the destruction of wildlife. Of similar significance was Paul Ehrlich’s 1968 book, The Population Bomb , which warned of the devastating effects the spiraling human population has on the planet’s resources. Of course, pollution and the depletion of natural resources have not been the only environmental concerns since that time: dwindling plant and animal biodiversity, the loss of wilderness, the degradation of ecosystems, and climate change are all part of a raft of “green” issues that have implanted themselves into both public consciousness and public policy over subsequent years. The job of environmental ethics is to outline our moral obligations in the face of such concerns. In a nutshell, the two fundamental questions that environmental ethics must address are: what duties do humans have with respect to the environment, and why? The latter question usually needs to be considered prior to the former. In order to tackle just what our obligations are, it is usually thought necessary to consider first

CHAPTER VIII ENVIRONMENTAL ETHICS
The issue of environmental ethics will be treated in the following way. Firstly, we shall treat the Filipino's world view which has much to say about his relationship with nature. Secondly, we shall see the principles of ethical judgment. By "principles" we mean the use of value ranking as a tool for ethical judgment. Thirdly, we shall summarize the ecological situation of the country. Fourthly, we shall then touch the values of ecology criminals. Lastly, we take a case study as a an application of environmental ethics. THE FILIPINO AND HIS RELATIONSHIP TO NATURE I would like to start with the world view of tribal Filipinos because that has been our original way of thinking. Then I shall go to the modern Filipino world view. Filipinos in general are not individualistic. The tribal Filipinos identify in their tribe and place. The tribal Filipino is like a tree that is rooted on something more than himselfhis family, his clan, his "tribe". This explains the phenomena of marriage as a union of two groups and not of two persons alone. If we go further, the Filipino does not think of himself as separate even from the departed. The latter are part of his sakop thinking. I would illustrate this point with a personal experience. After my priestly ordination there was a first solemn high mass at the hometown of my father in Naga, Cebu. Since our family stayed in Manila for some time, we told my relatives in Cebu to make the arrangement for the mass. During the mass, those who prepared the celebration put two chairs in the center of the aisle, one for my mother and the other for my deceased father. My mother felt uneasy about the empty chair, but my relatives insisted that the chair remain because they believed that my deceased father was present in the occasion. Anthropologist say that this way of thinking is tied up with animism, or better, primal religion.

You have had enough! Letters to Congress won't work. Despite your letters, and thousands more, it appears that they will nonetheless issue permits for still more oil platforms off the California coast. So you and your friends have organized a demonstration in Washington in front of the Rayburn House Office building, while inside a final Congressional review of the issue is being conducted by the House Interior Committee. At that moment, testimony is being offered in support of the platforms by lobbyists for the oil companies. Suddenly, a Sergeant-at Arms from the committee room walks out the front door and beckons to you. He tells you that the Committee Chairman has asked him to select a random demonstrator and to invite him inside so that the Committee might hear the protesters' point of view. By sheer chance you have been selected. Shortly thereafter you are seated in the committee room. The Chairman asks: "Why shouldn't we continue to extract oil from offshore California? You reply that to do so would be morally atrocious. You are then asked: "Very well, in what sense do you believe it morally atrocious?" And, "Will you please defend your position that is, will you give the Committee reasons why it should agree with you?"

33. Martin Heidegger And Environmental Ethics
Online scholarly paper by Tad Beckman.
http://www2.hmc.edu/~tbeckman/personal/Heidart.html
MARTIN HEIDEGGER AND ENVIRONMENTAL ETHICS After World War II, Martin Heidegger directed much of his thinking to technology and to the impact of technology on our perceptions of human life. One of the essays developed along this path was "The Question Concerning Technology." It is unfortunate that the essay is not widely read because it carries the critique of technology out of its usual context and form and delivers it into a new light where there is, perhaps, some progress to be made. Furthermore, the essay has special significance to environmental issues and, I believe, lays a new groundwork for an ethical approach to our relations with the environment. The tension in this essay comes into sharp focus, at the end, in Heidegger's preposterous suggestion that art may be what we need to carry us out of the dangerous epoch of technology. I say that this is "preposterous" on two grounds. First, our society thinks of technology as its distinctive talent and strength, not as a disaster. Second, our society sees art as frivolous and impotent in the "real world" of capitalistically generated technology. Heidegger himself recognized this irony and devoted the major portion of the essay to a careful analysis of the dangers that befall us in technology. His suggestion regarding art came late and remained poorly explicated. My intention, in this essay, is to interpret Heidegger's thesis about technology and art in the context of forming an ethical approach to the environment. What we shall discover along this path is that human nature, technology, and art are all intertwined in complex ways. At present, these relationships stand in great confusion and this confusion is part of the danger of our time. But this confusion can be grasped and dispensed with by thinking our way into the essence of our technological epoch. We may also ask, What is the essence of art that it might bear some relation to this epoch? And finally, What is our essence as human beings in relation to technology, art, and our natural environment?

What is Environmental Ethics?
Environmental ethics is a branch of environmental philosophy, that studies the ethical relationship between human beings and the environment. Environmental ethics has given a new dimension to the conservation of natural resources. For more information on this topic, read on Environmental ethics believes in the ethical relationship between human beings and the natural environment. Human beings are a part of the society and so are the other living beings. When we talk about the philosophical principle that guides our life, we often ignore the fact that even plants and animals are a part of our lives. They are an integral part of the environment and hence have a right to be considered a part of the human life. On these lines, it is clear that they should also be associated with our guiding principles as well as our moral and ethical values.
What is Environmental Ethics?
We are cutting down forests for making our homes. We are continuing with an excessive consumption of natural resources. Their excessive use is resulting in their depletion, risking the life of our future generations. Is this ethical? This is the issue that environmental ethics takes up. Scientists like Rachel Carson and the environmentalists who led philosophers to consider the philosophical aspect of environmental problems, pioneered in the development of environmental ethics as a branch of environmental philosophy.
The Earth Day celebration of 1970 was also one of the factors, which led to the development of environmental ethics as a separate field of study. This field received impetus when it was first discussed in the academic journals in North America and Canada. Around the same time, this field also emerged in Australia and Norway. Today, environmental ethics is one of the major concerns of mankind.

Ian A. Smith Metropolitan State College of Denver  In the western United States, environmental groups like the Glen Canyon Institute have worked tirelessly to save several species of endangered fish along the Colorado River, including the humpback chub (Gila cypha). Partly on the basis of wanting to save these endangered fish species, the Institute has advocated that the Glen Canyon Dam in the Colorado River Basin be decommissioned. Without the dam, the Colorado River will warm up and become muddy again in Glen Canyon, which is good for the endangered fish species. However, removal of the dam is bad for the introduced fish species of the river, such as the striped bass, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, and walleye which prefer cool, clear waters that the dam has been able to provide.
