Environmental Ethics
Modern Pantheism as an Approach to Environmental Ethics
by Harold W. Wood, Jr.*
ABSTRACT:
While philosophers debate the precise articulation of philosophical theory to achieve a desirable change in environmental attitudes, they may be neglecting the fountainhead of social change. Insofar as ordinary people am concerned, it is religion which is the greatest factor in determining morality. In order to achieve an enlightened environmental ethics, we need what can only be termed a "religious experience. " While not denying the efficacy of other religious persuasions, I explore the contribution of an informed modern Pantheism to environmental ethics. The conceptual division of the holy and the world is rectified by pantheism. As a form of "nature mysticism." pantheism promotes a theological basis for achieving oneness with God through knowledge, devotion. and works, all of which establish an enlightened theory for environmental ethics. A modern pantheism bears investigation by those advocating new ethical approaches toward the environment. "This doctrine of pantheism is more than a mere theory. It has tremendous practical and ethical implications." - Henry Thomas and Dane Lee Thomas

Environmental ethics
Environmental ethics is a branch of philosophy that considers the moral relations between human beings and their natural environment. As a field of study, it assumes that humans have certain responsibilities to the natural world, and it seeks to help people and their leaders become aware of them and to act responsibly when they do things that impact the natural world.
The need for ethics
Most people recognize that some agreed-upon guidelines or general rules should exist between individuals when they interact with one another because if they did not, nothing in our lives would be predictable or safe. In other words, people need to know that besides actual laws, there are some basic, common ethics or principles of what is right and what is wrong that everyone agrees upon and usually follows or lives by. Ethics is sometimes called moral philosophy because it is concerned with what is morally good and bad or what is right and wrong. As a specialized part of ethics, environmental ethics is concerned with the morality (right and wrong) of human actions as they affect the environment or the natural world we live in.

While centers on environmental philosophy and policy, its substantive coverage casts a wide shadow. Past authors have been concerned with a range of subjects, such as applied environmental ethics, animal rights, justice in urban society, development ethics, sustainability, and cultural values relevant to environmental concerns. The journal also welcomes analyses of practical applications of environmental, urban, and regional policies, as well as theoretically robust discussions of common but weak arguments that appear throughout the environmental discourse, either in the scholarly literature or in the broader civil sphere. is of particular relevance to a number of disciplines, including Philosophy, Environmental Studies, Political Science, Public Policy, Law, Ecology, Economics, Architecture, Geography, and Urban Planning.

Environmental Ethics
The origins of environmental ethics began with the first Earth Day in 1970, when "environmentalists started urging philosophers who were involved with environmental groups to do something about environmental ethics," (Brief 2002, 1). Over the past three decades the field of environmental ethics has evolved, one that includes theological and religious theories. My environmental theory is holistic, that is it emphasizes the significance of the whole and the interdependence of its parts. With respect to the environment, I truly believe that all of the parts of nature, humans, animals, plants, water systems, soil, etc. are interdependent and that to diminish are of the parts diminishes the whole. My belief in the interdependence of the whole of the environment rather than a separation of its parts has its roots in Zen Buddhism , where each and all living things are interdependent. I believe the whole of the environment is a self-sustaining system whose parts are interdependent and cannot be diminished without impacting the overall whole system. This ethical belief is indirect contrast to nature/culture dualism which posits that humans are more important and superior to other species in the environment. As Slicer (2003) says of nature/culture dualism, it "involves an emphatic and distancing form of separation which creates a sharp ontological break or radical discontinuity and opposition between the spheres of human culture and the devalued and undif

Welcome
The W. Maurice Young Centre for Applied Ethics (the Centre) is an interdisciplinary research unit within the College for Interdisciplinary Studies , at the University of British Columbia . The Centre was created in 1993 with endowments by W. Maurice Young (LLD) and the Bentall Foundation. The Centre’s affairs are managed by a Coordinating Committee representing faculty, students and research associates, chaired by the Director of the Centre.
The Centre’s approach to other UBC academic and research units follows from our position as an interdisciplinary academic centre, and from our mission to advance the research agenda of applied ethics. A number of departments and units including Animal Welfare , the Institute for Resources, Environment, and Sustainability Nursing and Philosophy have contributed outstanding students to the Centre, while our research and teaching/supervision now ties us to Medical Genetics, Law, Political Science, Journalism, Forestry, Botany and Computing Sciences. These relationships and the products of our collaborations place the Centre at the forefront of the movement to create “transdisciplinary” research.
Mission
The Centre's mission is to advance research and teaching of applied ethics, conceived as the application of normative methods to core issues in science and technology ethics and policy, organizational ethics, animal welfare, health, the environment, and research ethics.

Introduction Contributors Sustainability of Forests: An Attempt at a Biological Interpretation by Professor Dr. Peter Schutt Sustainable Development, Sustainable Yield Forestry, and the Meaning of Life by Jordan S. Tanz The Postmodern Forest: Images Differing by Dr. Steven Taubeneck Sustainable Development: What Do We Owe to Future Generations? by Dr. Thomas Hurka INTRODUCTION The conference was organized around the idea that sustainable development and competition are in some sense competing visions of our global future. Nowhere is this potential conflict more salient than in the forestry industry. Canada, and B.C. in par ticular, shares with Germany a concern for the fate of forests and for the industries based on forest resources. This conference sought to bring together academics from both Canadian and German universities to explore the ethical challenges associated with these competing visions. Those attending the conference had the opportunity to hear talks from a wide variety of specialties, ranging from botany to cultural studies to philosophy. Of the talks given, four were developed into papers to be included in this publication. Special thanks go to Dr. Schutt for making his speaking notes available for this purpose.

LEAP promotes animal liberation because it believes that all animals have value and interests, independent of their usefulness to human beings. To read about the difference between animal liberation/rights and animal welfare, click here. The LEAP founders have adopted the philosophy that all living beings are worthy of equal consideration, that animals and nature need protection, and that they should be included within our current legal and political system. LEAP teaches a compassionate way of living based on the principle of Ahimsanonviolence towards all living things. LEAP is dedicated to advocacy and education on issues affecting domesticated nonhumans, such as vegetarianism and veganism, vivisection, dissection, animals in entertainment, pound seizure, factory farming, animal shelter policies, and spay and neuter programs, as well as issues affecting wildlife and the environment, such as species extinction, habitat encroachment, ecosystem imbalance, global warming, and resource conservation. LEAP hopes that its work will lead to the elimination of environmental destruction and ecologically unsound policies. LEAP informs via public speaking, special events, and information-based campaigns. The Board of Directors and its officers receive no compensation, and LEAP activities are supported by unpaid volunteers; thus, all donated funds are applied directly towards the League's goals. Membership fees wholly support LEAP's educational and advocacy programs.

Section Introductions from Environmental Ethics: Approaches and Issues An Unpublished Textbook Anthology Portions of these excerpts date back to my first UC-Santa Barbara class, in the Spring of 1980. Some of that material later found its way into "Nature as a Moral Resource," published in Environmental Ethics, in the Summer of 1984. That manuscript, of course, was "set in stone" sometime in 1983. Thereafter, these section introductions continued to evolve. Excluded from these pieces are the extended references to the papers included in the sections of the anthology. What remains may be of general interest to the teacher of Environmental Ethics. This material, now approaching thirty years old, is long overdue for a major revision, to reflect recent developments in the field of Environmental Ethics. Hopefully, that overhaul will be undertaken in the near future.
