Environmental management systems
The EPA has found that most business owners are overwhelmed by the variety of different environmental management systems and struggle to know where to start addressing their environmental issues. For this reason, the EPA has found that a DIY visual mapping system called eco-mapping is a great way for businesses to create a simple environmental action plan with their staff.
Eco-mapping
Eco-mapping is not a goal in itself but a visual process to identify the environmental aspects in a plant or industry, quickly and simply. An eco-map is a diagram of the plant showing the locations where attention is needed to improve environmental performance. Eco-maps are useful because they permit a fast, highly visual understanding of where problems or potential issues are within an organisation. Once completed, eco-mapping can serve as the basis for a wider environmental management system.

Environmental Management Systems
Tom Pedersen What is an EMS?
An environmental management system (EMS) integrates environmental considerations into day-to-day decision making and other practices through the systematic assembly of organizational elements, business processes, and technology tools, and does so in a way that promotes their use by all employees in sustaining the continuous improvement of the organization's environmental performance. What are the benefits of an EMS?
We've seen organizational strengthening as the most important outcome of implementing an EMS. Whether an entity's goal is to improve regulatory compliance or better manage risks, we work with the organization to instill environmental awareness and communication across all its levels and functions. An EMS improves operations and can save money by working toward meaningful performance measures and targets. Engaging senior management in the regular review of progress and an objective assessment of the management system's effectiveness sustains the continuous improvement cycle. Who should consider implementing an EMS?

The 2006 Amendments to the Toxics Use Reduction Act (TURA) created alternative planning opportunities for companies subject to TURA that have completed a TUR Plan and two or more updates. Once prepared, these alternative plans must be certified by TUR Planners who have been approved by DEP by earning additional TUR credits in the appropriate disciplines. TURI provides training programs to enhance Planners' skills in the area of Environmental Management Systems (EMS), so that Planners can evaluate and certify these types of plans. Upon completion of the required training classes, the Planner submits an application to the Department of Environmental Protection, and if accepted, is authorized to certify that a TURA EMS meets DEP requirements. Listed below are upcoming opportunities to gain the credits required to apply for authorization to certify a TURA EMS.

    History
Since 1989, Cedar Grove Composting has operated a commercial composting facility in unincorporated King County, Washington, between Renton and Maple Valley. In cooperation with, and with support from the Seattle-King County Department of Public Health (SKCDPH) and the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency (PSCAA), Cedar Grove's Maple Valley Facility has developed an Environmental Management System (EMS), incorporating principles established by ISO 14001. This EMS is in the secondary stage of development having completed nine operational years.
    Philosophy
Senior management and the owners have embraced the EMS concept. One unique and applicable aspect of the EMS process revolves around the concept of continuous improvement. Truly effective environmental management systems do not appear in a few weeks. The implementation and employee participation in process alterations builds over a period of months and years. As a culture builds to support and understand these principles, the true value is realized.
    Process
Cedar Grove is committed to the EMS process and decision making structure. It has five basic phases: policies, planning, implementation, corrective monitoring, and review. This format provides accountability for action and allows for continual improvement. The system is very appropriate for the composting industry. The industry has learned a lot, but still must refine manufacturing practices and develop positive relationships with local communities. In this way, the citizens of Washington, both locally and region wide, will share in the benefits of recycling biodegradable material.

    Environmental Information
The environment has arrived! It is no longer just the air we breath, or the world we live in, it has become a requirement for businesses to address the environment in order to maintain customers, and exist [thrive] in an ever more critical global economy. There is an ever-upward spiral of new environmentally related legislation. All of which aids global environment for our fellow citizens. Environmental management systems can assist an organisation to meet its increasingly heavy burden of responsibility for the future condition of our world environment. In many cases, the introduction of an environmental management system can also aid cost savings, and reduction of environmental liability. There are a number of standards available, around which we can model our Environmental Management System, or EMS. On the international scene we will shortly have . This standard is expected to be issued during 1996, and forms part of the ISO14000 series of standards providing not only a specification but guidance and advice on a wide range of environmental issues including auditing, labeling, life-cycle assessment etc.

The National Environmental Management Act (NEMA) 108 of 1998 contains principles for sustainable development and established the procedures that must be followed in each stage of the IEM process. The overall function of the EMS branch is to assist the City of Cape Town to comply with these principles and procedures in order to promote sustainable development. Key functions of the branch include: Environmental review Environmental input is provided for proposed policies, plans, programmes and projects, both from other spheres of government, such as National and Provincial government, and for private sector development proposals. This often involves co-ordinating City comment on Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) processes and reports, as well as providing input to the development of project proposals in order to ensure that they comply with legislative and policy requirements.
