Environmental Management Systems (EMS)
An Environment Management System (EMS) is a tool for managing the impacts of an organisation's activities on the environment. It provides a structured approach to planning and implementing environment protection measures. An EMS monitors environmental performance, similar to the way a financial management system monitors expenditure and income and enables regular checks of a company's financial performance. An EMS integrates environmental management into a company's daily operations, long term planning and other quality management systems.
Components of an EMS
To develop an EMS, an organisation has to assess its environmental impacts, set targets to reduce these impacts, and plan how to achieve the targets. The most important component of an EMS is organisational commitment. For an effective EMS to be developed and implemented, you need commitment from the very top of the organisation, as well as all staff. Following are more examples of components that should be considered when developing an EMS. Environmental Policy: this is a statement of what an organisation intends to achieve from an EMS. It ensures all environmental activities are consistent with the organisation's objectives.

Environmental Management Systems
Kynoch Environmental Management, Inc. (KEM) provides engineering consulting services to develop and implement corporate environmental management systems. KEM’s work and the programs developed by the firm will be based on the following principles:
  • The first step in any successful Environmental Management System (EMS) is to define an environmental policy and to make a commitment to the development and implementation of an effective EMS. Next, a written definition of the EMS that clearly communicates the vision and goals of the program must be developed. An EMS can only be fulfilled and improved if the plan is committed to writing. In order to implement the EMS, the capabilities and support for the mechanisms and practices of the EMS must be put into place. These may be provided by an outside organization or may be developed within the organization. The EMS must establish an effective means of measurement and evaluation in order to monitor an organization’s performance against established objectives.

    Environmental Management Systems
By Katherine McIntire Peters and Kellie Lunney What Is It? The government uses environmental management systems as comprehensive frameworks to improve the energy efficiency of federal facilities and transportation fleets, cut costs and reduce adverse effects on the environment. A 2007 executive order dubbed EMS the "primary management approach" in the government's effort to become greener. Environmental management systems are like environmentally specific versions of the President's Management Agenda. This approach to green government has been around since the 1990s, but became a requirement for agencies in an April 2002 executive order . The EMS framework incorporates governmentwide performance metrics that enable agencies to review their compliance with environmental regulations and laws on an ongoing basis. Agencies ranging from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to the Defense Department have put in place EMS strategies to oversee various green government initiatives. For instance, CDC has tried to reduce hazardous waste by using an electronic system that manages records and tracks toxins. This approach has helped the agency identify more opportunities for minimizing waste. The General Services Administration, which shepherds the federal government's green portfolio, has several environmental management systems for areas including energy and water conservation, recycling and sustainable design.

Sustainability Concepts Environmental Management Systems A. Definition An Environmental Management System (EMS) is a voluntary management tool that provides a framework for an organisation to pro-actively manage its potential and actual environmental risks and opportunities. EMSs identify, document, monitor, evaluate and communicate an organisation's environmental performance. Developed inline with the organisation's environmental policy and extending throughout the organisation, an EMS is part of the organisation's overall management system. An EMS provides order, processes and procedures, assigns responsibilities, allocates resources and provides continual evaluation of planning activities, organisational structure and practices. B. Main Features An EMS can be created for an entire organisation, for individual sites or for aspects of the organisation. It follows the cyclic "Plan-Do-Check-Act" principle, resulting in continuous improvement and the consideration of environmental issues in the daily operations of the organisation. Whilst content and coverage of an EMS varies depending on scope and organisation type, each EMS does have common elements. The Urban Environmental Management EMS Training Resource Kit notes that each EMS should:
