Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research
Welcome to SCAR
Welcome to the Home Page of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR), an inter-disciplinary committee of the International Council for Science (ICSU) . SCAR is charged with initiating, developing and coordinating high quality international scientific research in the Antarctic region, and on the role of the Antarctic region in the Earth system. The scientific business of SCAR is conducted by its Standing Scientific Groups which represent the scientific disciplines active in Antarctic research and report to SCAR. In addition to carrying out its primary scientific role, SCAR also provides objective and independent scientific advice to the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meetings and other organizations on issues of science and conservation affecting the management of Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. In that role, SCAR has made numerous recommendations on a variety of matters, most of which have been incorporated into Antarctic Treaty instruments. Foremost amongst these have been the advice provided for the many international agreements which provide protection for the ecology and environment of the Antarctic. SCAR meets every two years to conduct its administrative business at the SCAR Delegates Meeting. At these meetings the members of SCAR, through their appointed Delegates, are responsible for approving SCAR finances, and formulating SCAR policy and strategy. They also elect an Executive Committee from among themselves which is responsible for the day-to-day administration of SCAR though its Secretariat at the Scott Polar Research Institute in Cambridge, England. Global Change Student Grant Competition
  • One of the Center's major activities is the annual Global Change Student Research Grant Competition, which has funded both graduate and undergraduate research projects since its inception in 1992. For more information on the competition, and the 2011 competition guidelines, click here Deadline for submitting proposals is 11 February 2011.
  • Eighteen of the 71 proposals submitted to the 2010 competition were selected for full or partial funding. A list of these projects can be found here
Global Change
Although the Earth system is constantly changing, ozone depletion, increases in atmospheric greenhouse gases, large-scale pollution and changing patterns of natural resource use demonstrate that human activities are altering the Earth system at an accelerated pace. Awareness of this has led to an evolving international consensus on the importance of both increasing our scientific understanding of global change and linking scientific findings to policy decisions.
The Role of the Arctic
The Arctic is characterized by one of the most extreme environments on the planet, with limited sunlight, extreme temperatures, and a short growing season. Sea ice, snow cover, glaciers, tundra, permafrost, boreal forests, and peatlands are all sensitive indicators of change, susceptible to subtle variations in sunlight, surface temperature, ocean heat transport, air and ocean chemistry, and the particulate loading of the atmosphere.

Southern Global Change Program
The Southern Global Change Program (SGCP) is part of the Eastern Forest Environmental Threat Assessment Center (EFETAC) research work unit (RWU-4854) and program of the USDA Forest Service Southern Research Station . Our research scientists and support staff work hard to contribute new science every year in the areas of forest ecosystems, water quality, biodiversity, and wildfires, all with an emphasis on climate change and global warming.
SGCP has regional, national, and international responsibilities in several key research areas focusing on healthy forest ecosystems and addressing forest health risks. Using a combination of computer models, geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing, and field research in its integrated assessments, SGCP is a Forest Service leader in examining multiple stress impacts across multiple natural resource sectors.
The SGCP was formed in 1990 as a part of the Congressionally mandated US Global Change Research Program. Our goal has been to study the interactive effects of pollution and global climate change on southern forests. Contact Information Team Lead:

Global ChangeIntersection of Nature and Culture
October 21st, 2010 NY Times Helping chickens go calmly to slaughter , raises interesting questions about how we produce poultry in the U.S. and the shift to more humane practices of meat production: “I don’t want the public to say we gas our chickens,” he said. Animal suffering during slaughter has long been a criticism of animal welfare ethicists and activists.  So does this new approach help allay some of those concerns? How big of an impact will these two companies have on total poultry production? Mary’s, which distributes in several Western states, expects to install the technology in June. The company processes about 200,000 birds a week. By comparison, a single plant run by a large processor like Tyson Foods may handle more than 1 million birds a week. As Michael Pollan and others have demonstrated in earlier essays The gas technology is expensive. Each company said it would cost about $3 million to convert their operations and more over time to run the systems. That makes it a hard sell in a commodity-oriented industry that relies on huge volumes and low costs to turn narrow margins into profits. Mr. Sechler predicted that consumers would come to demand birds slaughtered in the new way, which would force the industry to gradually switch over.
