Mining
Easier - Mining is the work or business of taking minerals from the earth. A hole or tunnel is dug in the ground to take out metals, coal, salt, or other minerals. Harder - Most substances obtained from the earth are gotten by mining. Mining provides iron for steel making, salt for food, coal for fuel, and gold, silver, and diamonds for jewelry. Mined materials also include stone for building, phosphate for fertilizer, and gravel for highways. There are many methods of mining, dependent on where and how a coal or mineral deposit is found. Some substances are mined relatively cheap because they can be found at or near the earth's surface. Some minerals are found as a compact mass, while others are widely scattered. Other mined materials are found far beneath the surface and removed by tunneling deep underground. Some mined substances are located beneath oceans, lakes, and rivers. Other minerals are concentrated in large bodies of water and are obtained by pumping. Mine Safety and Health Administration's Kid's Page

Utah History Encyclopedia Mining for metals, coal, hydrocarbons, and minerals was a vital aspect of Utah's economic, industrial, political, and social growth and development. The mining industry has touched all aspects of life in Utah and has contributed greatly to the state's history. Mormon gold miners participated in the initial discovery of gold in California, and gold dust imported from California between 1848 and 1851 to Utah was processed by Mormon pioneers. But Brigham Young discouraged his people from searching for precious metals because he feared not only the loss of critical manpower to the goldfields but also that mining would distract Mormons from agricultural pursuits and would attract non-Mormons, or Gentiles. Although early leaders of Mormon Church placed a higher value on agricultural development than on mining for the precious metals, Brigham Young did recognize the need for iron, a metal that was costly to import by wagon from the East. In 1850 Young issued a "call" for an "iron mission" to southern Utah (Iron County), but after four years this effort was abandoned. In the 1860s church leaders encouraged lead and silver mining around Minersville. Brigham Young's resistance to precious-metal mining began to break down with the coming of the railroad, and Mormons came to dominate the prospecting of such ores in many areas until the economic collapse of the mid-1870s. In the 1880s and 1890s, the decades after Brigham Young's death in 1877, a number of church leaders including John Taylor, George Q. Cannon, and Joseph F. Smith, became involved in the ownership of silver mines.

Mining in Wisconsin
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is the agency that has the primary responsibility for regulating environmental aspects of metallic mining activities in the state. Within DNR, the Waste Management Program has a lead role in regulating metallic mining activities, including metallic mineral exploration (drilling), prospecting (bulk sampling), mining and mining waste disposal. The Waste Management Program also regulates oil and gas exploration and has oversight over locally administered nonmetallic mining reclamation programs.
Metallic Mining
The Waste Management Program is responsible for reviewing proposed mining permit applications, including the associated mining plan, reclamation plan and project-wide monitoring plan, and any associated mining waste facility siting and design studies. Metallic mining operations may include an open pit or underground mine constructed for the extraction of copper-, gold-, lead- and zinc-bearing minerals. Proposed projects undergo a comprehensive review to determine whether they will comply with the applicable laws and rules of the state. This review culminates with a contested case hearing on all regulatory aspects of the proposed project and the adequacy of the environmental impact statement (EIS).

Mining Good Mining Knowledge for Everyone.
The world of mining has more than seven thousand producing mines around the globe and every year we can find that there are more quickly progressing and being developed. These mines give us the raw materials needed for the construction, manufacturing and industries of chemicals and the majority of the minerals of energy upon which our everyday life is so needed of. The amount of mines and mills previously mentioned gives us most of the things we hardly take notice of nowadays. From the seven thousand mines you can get all the materials needed in metals used for household products, airplanes, buildings and cars which you can find everywhere. Somewhere in the world there is some mining operation which gives us most of the gold or raw materials for our chemical and building industries and even the uranium and coal which give us much of the electricity that we use in our everyday consumption. The typical mining areas of Eastern Europe have historical bearings as well as the fields of tin which are found and found in England are the cradles of the technologies of mineral processing, mining, and metallurgical processes
