From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search This article is about noise as an unwanted phenomenon. For other uses, see Noise (disambiguation) In common use, the word noise means any unwanted sound . In both analog and digital electronics noise is an unwanted perturbation to a wanted signal; it is called noise as a generalisation of the audible noise heard when listening to a weak radio transmission. Signal noise is heard as acoustic noise if played through a loudspeaker ; it manifests as ' snow ' on a television or video image. Noise can block, distort, change or interfere with the meaning of a message in human, animal and electronic communication. In signal processing or computing it can be considered unwanted data without meaning; that is, data that is not being used to transmit a signal , but is simply produced as an unwanted by-product of other activities. "Signal-to-noise ratio" is sometimes used informally to refer to the ratio of useful information to false or irrelevant data in a conversation or exchange, such as off-topic posts and spam in online discussion forums and other online communities. The State of New Jersey DEP is authorized by the Noise Control Act of 1971 to promulgate codes, rules and regulations relating to the control and abatement of noise. The Department has developed a Model Noise Ordinance that can be adopted by local municipalities. The Noise Control Act allows municipalities to adopt noise control ordinances that are more stringent than the State code. The Office of Local Environmental Management (OLEM) will provide assistance to county and municipal governing bodies in the development and adoption of a local noise ordinance, to ensure that all local noise control ordinances are consistent with the Noise Control Act and comply with its requirements.

NOISE Acoustics / Noise Etymologically the word can be traced back to Old French ( noyse noysa, nosa, nausa ), but its origin is uncertain. It has a variety of meanings and shadings of meaning, the most important of which are the following: Unwanted sound: The Oxford English Dictionary contains references to noise as unwanted SOUND dating back as far as 1225. Unmusical sound: The 19th century physicist Hermann von Helmholtz employed the term 'noise' to describe sound composed of non- PERIODIC vibrations (e.g. the rustling of leaves), by comparison with musical sounds, which consist of periodic vibrations. Noise is still used in this sense in expressions such as BROAD BAND NOISE GAUSSIAN NOISE NARROW BAND NOISE RANDOM NOISE ... RUSTLE NOISE or WHITE NOISE Any loud sound: In general usage today, noise often refers to particularly loud sounds. In this sense a noise abatement by-law prohibits certain loud sounds or establishes their permissible limits in DECIBEL s. See:

NOTE: In the past, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) coordinated all federal noise control activities through its Office of Noise Abatement and Control. However, In 1981, the Administration at that time concluded that noise issues were best handled at the State or local government level. As a result, the EPA phased out the office's funding in 1982 as part of a shift in federal noise control policy to transfer the primary responsibility of regulating noise to state and local governments. However, the Noise Control Act of 1972 and the Quiet Communities Act of 1978 were not rescinded by Congress and remain in effect today, although essentially unfunded. Home Problem in NZ Other Countries Effects of Noise ... Contact Details Welcome to the Noise Off Website Are you sick and tired of noisy car exhausts? You are not alone. Almost every community in New Zealand now suffers the effects of excessive noise from deliberately modified vehicles. The noise is harmful and completely unnecessary. It should be illegal. Right now, hundreds of thousands of New Zealanders are regularly disturbed by the noise epidemic. The problem extends far beyond homeowners and road users – it now impacts on business and tourism. Restaurants and Cafes are losing customers. Angry tourists are checking out of hotels. The clean green image of New Zealand is going up in smoke. And political parties are failing to act. Noise Off is determined to make change. The Noise Off Charitable Trust was established in July 2005 to tackle the problem head on. We need your help too. Noise Off's top priority is to: " To promote the reduction of motor vehicle noise emissions throughout New Zealand for the improvement of the health and well being of our communities and the quality of our environment ."

    5. Is there evidence that noise can make us sick?
What is Noise Pollution? Noise pollution is not easily defined because it is different from other forms of pollution. One measure of pollution is the danger it poses to health. Noise causes stress, which is a leading cause of illness and suicide. Therefore, any form of noise can be considered pollution if it causes annoyance, sleeplessness, fright, or any other stress reaction.
    • Noise is transient; once the pollution stops, the environment is free of it. This is not the case for chemicals, sewage, and other pollutants introduced into the air, soil, or water. Other forms of pollution can be measured, and scientists can estimate how much material can be introduced into the environment before harm is done. We can measure individual sounds that may damage human hearing, but it is difficult to monitor cumulative exposure to noise or to determine just how much is too much. The definition of noise itself is highly subjective. To some people the roar of an engine is satisfying or thrilling; to others it is an annoyance. Loud music may be enjoyable or a torment, depending on the listener and the circumstances.

Hazardous sound levels are louder than 80 decibels, which isn't as loud as traffic on a busy street. Listening to loud music, especially on headphones, is a common cause of noise-induced hearing loss. Keeping the volume down when listening to music and wearing earplugs when using loud equipment can help protect your hearing.
