With a rich history dating back to the Alaskan Gold Rush in 1896, Rainier continues to break new ground as an industry leader in the area of environmental stewardship. In 2007, we developed Rainier's Sustainability Initiative and are working toward going green in all aspects of our company, from how we manage our plant to the manufacturing of products, the shipping and installation of our products and ultimately what happens to our products at the end of their useful life. In 2008 we launched a formal Environmental Management System and we became certified in ISO 14001 in May of 2009. We strive in our daily operations to use environmentally friendly products that will protect our natural resources, to reduce our energy consumption and to recycle the bulk of our solid waste. Rainier also encourages employees to be more environmentally sensitive away from work and to do their part in reducing our carbon footprint by using alternative methods of transportation for commuting to and from work.

View of P.I.E In Los Angeles, California, the impacts of environmental degradation are acute. Environmental consequences of fire, earthquakes, drought, and pollution are at the forefront of the issues the residents of Los Angeles respond to on a daily basis. At Otis, we recognize the importance of addressing the sustainability of the planet through our practices as an institution, and our instruction as educators.
These pages document the initiatives on campus and in our classrooms that forward the practice and awareness of sustainability at Otis. We approach sustainability from its environmental, social and economic dimensions as a practice and way of life that supports and sustains resources for the future.
It is our intention to support sustainable practices on many levels at Otis. The Environmental Steering Committee (ESC), a committee of faculty and staff, has initiated a green house gas audit, in order to assess the impacts of our buildings and activities on the environment. (see

Sustainability
Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. This definition was created in 1987 at the World Commission on Environment and Development (the Brundtland Commission). It is enshrined in the Swiss federal constitution. It is similar to the "seventh generation" philosophy of the Native American Iroquois Confederacy, mandating that chiefs always consider the effects of their actions on their descendants seven generations in the future. There are many ways to measure or define sustainability. As described in the book Natural Capitalism , in business, these should include the sustainable development and use of, at least, the following four types of capital:
  • Financial Capital Manufacturing Capital Natural Capital Human Capital
In addition, many organizations use the following criteria to assess sustainable products, services, and other activities: Social Criteria:
  • Socially desirable Culturally acceptable Psychologically nurturing
Financial Criteria:
  • Economically sustainable Technologically feasible Operationally viable
Environmental Criteria:
  • Environmentally Robust Generationally Sensitive Capable of continuous learning

SUSTAINABILITY What by Brian Kermath References Links Although the essential conceptual elements of the "sustainability" idea have been around for a long time, the term in its present context did not become a significant item of academic discourse across a range of disciplines until the 1980s following a few seminal publications, and it did not become popularized until a decade later after the release of Our Common Future by the WCED in 1987. Since then, a veritable flood of publications has defined, redefined, and scrutinized the idea and applied it to most human endeavors. Although its charge is undeniably needed for forging a quality and durable future a nd comes with nearly universal appeal, some commentators have argued that sustainability is conceptually too vague to have much practical value. Others have suggested that the idea became so diluted and misapplied as to be meaningless in most forums. Yet despite the many misinterpretations of what sustainability is, widespread cooption of the term, and countless questionable claims of praxis
