Looking for dynamic, relevant applications of algebra? This series brings the real-world to life for the Algebra classroom. Series Description
The Algebra Applications series brings real-world, relevant applications of algebra to today’s classroom. This series also integrates technology through the use of the Texas Instruments TI-Nspire graphing calculator. The key features of this series include: Guided applications that are interdisciplinary and can be done as an in-class group activity.
All keystrokes are clearly shown.
Dynamic footage and animations bring math to life.
Math concepts are developed clearly, making this series an ideal supplement to an Algebra 1 or Algebra 2 class. Other Products: Algebra Nspirations Geometry Applications Linear Functions
In this episode of Algebra Applications, three real-world explorations of linear functions are developed:
Sports
The relationship between slope and grade in cycling. Go on a tour of Italy through the mountains of Tuscany and apply students' understanding of slope.

Dear Parents/Guardians and Students,
Welcome to (Algebra Applications). I would like to take this opportunity to review my classroom expectations so that this will be a rewarding school year for all of us as you begin your high school career. By reading and signing these policies, you are acknowledging your awareness and acceptance to abide by these policies in this classroom at all times. CLASSROOM PROCEDURES ALGEBRA APPLICATIONS MS. TOPOOZIAN After the bell rings, students will leave their seats only with permission. Raise your hand to receive permission or to speak. All assignments should be placed on the first desk of your row. You do not need to staple your papers, just make sure your name is on every piece of paper. After the teacher has collected homework, she will not accept anymore assignments. The teacher ALWAYS dismisses the students, NOT the bell. Each class will be responsible for clean-up of the classroom. Students will be corrected when using inappropriate language or behavior (warning, phone call home, detention, referral).

Linear Algebra and Applications Textbook
Welcome again. In order to enable prospective users to preview my text easily and conveniently, in the past I have put a copy of it on the web for your perusal. In the last few years I've received many helpful comments and appreciative notes for having done so. I would like to thank those of you who sent me these notes and comments. You have helped me substantially improve the text. I am now under contract with Springer-Verlag and the book has been published in their Undergraduate Texts in Mathematics series in hardbound and, more recently, soft cover editions. Therefore, I have removed the on-line copy. I will leave the table of contents below for informational purposes, along with errata sheets for the each version of the textbook. A few comments:
If you have any suggestions or comments, drop me a line. I appreciate any feedback.
Resources
A complete solutions manual to all exercises and problems in the text is available to instructors who have adopted the text. Instructors who would like a copy of this manual should contact Mark Spencer via email to Mark.Spencer@springer.com.
For the benefit of instructors and students using my text, I'm moving a number of downloadable files on my website that pertain specifically to the text into their own directories. I also have complete solution keys to the exams and projects that are found in the directories below. I will email these to instructors who are using my text upon request. The text materials come in three flavors: pdf for perusal, lyx and tex for modification and use by instructors.

Word problems are problems that are presented in words rather than in equation form. Because the intent is to provide experiences in many of the different ways that algebra skills can be applied to (semi) real life situations, these problems are also called applications. We say that we are modeling the problem when we create an equation that describes the situation put forth in the words of the problem. Applications that we typically encounter in college algebra courses seldom seem to grab the interest of students. One reason for this is that it is difficult to create a word problem that will appeal to all students. Another reason is that we, as instructors, attempt to present some 'standard' types of problems that allow you to gain some familiarity (and hoped for success) with modeling. Unfortunately, in an effort to help you be successful, we often simplify the problem to the point of absurdity. While I can apologize for that tendency, I will be guilty of the same thing since I am going to be taking problems that are similar to those in your text and I too want to help you identify a few patterns in application modeling that might help you later. Our main emphasis in solving a word problem is not just getting an answer, because truthfully, we really don't care about the specific answer within this contrived context.

What are C*-algebras good for?
John Baez
March 1, 2000
I'd like to say a bit about the importance of C*-algebras in physics. I'll carefully avoid any sort of mathematical details and focus on the basic physical ideas. Everything will be nonrigorous, handwavy, and vague. I won't even define what a C*-algebra is! I just want to get you interested. For details, try some of the references at the end. In quantum mechanics we often start by taking classical observables and writing down some formulas which say that actually these observables don't commute. The famous example is of course pq - qp = i hbar but there are many others. When we do this, what we're really doing is defining an algebra - physicists would usually call it an "algebra of observables". C*-algebras are a way of making this precise. They were invented by Irving Segal in 1947. However, his work was based on that of others, especially von Neumann's papers with Murray the foundations of quantum mechanics, and also the ideas of Gelfand and Naimark. Now, observables aren't much use without states. One way to get ahold of states is to take your algebra of observables and represent it as an algebra of operators on a Hilbert space. Then unit vectors in your Hilbert space represent states.
