Title: Clifford algebra, geometric algebra, and applications
Authors: Douglas Lundholm Lars Svensson (Submitted on 30 Jul 2009) Abstract: These are lecture notes for a course on the theory of Clifford algebras, with special emphasis on their wide range of applications in mathematics and physics. Clifford algebra is introduced both through a conventional tensor algebra construction (then called geometric algebra) with geometric applications in mind, as well as in an algebraically more general form which is well suited for combinatorics, and for defining and understanding the numerous products and operations of the algebra. The various applications presented include vector space and projective geometry, orthogonal maps and spinors, normed division algebras, as well as simplicial complexes and graph theory.     It is an domain of mathematics that use alphabetic characters in place of numbers to derive results for a given situation. This abstraction is the very reason why most people find algebra scary and too difficult to handle and it is the same reasons why some students find it fun to play around with. Algebra topics range from working with inequalities to factoring binomials all the way to finding the y-intercept. In almost all cases, just as in any other math related class, students start off by adding, subtracting and simplifying algebraic expressions . They then move on to understanding equivalent fractions, finding Least Common Multiples (LCM) and converting fractions to decimals

    Programme theme
    Model theory is a branch of mathematical logic dealing with abstract structures (models), historically with connections to other areas of mathematics. In the past decade, model theory has reached a new maturity, allowing for a strengthening of these connections and striking applications to diophantine geometry, analytic geometry and Lie theory, as well as strong interactions with group theory, representation theory of finite-dimensional algebras, and the study of the p-adics. The main objective of the semester will be to consolidate these advances by providing the required interdisciplinary collaborations. Model theory is traditionally divided into two parts pure and applied. Pure model theory studies abstract properties of first order theories, and derives structure theorems for their models. Applied model theory on the other hand studies concrete algebraic structures from a model-theoretic point of view, and uses results from pure model theory to get a better understanding of the structures in question, of the lattice of definable sets, and of various functorialities and uniformities of definition. By its very nature, applied model theory has strong connections to other branches of mathematics, and its results often have non-model-theoretic implications. A substantial knowledge of algebra, and nowadays of algebraic and analytic geometry, is required.

    (01/17) 5pm: Before calculating the final grades, I will likely add 6 points to everyone's final exam score. This should counteract the slightly unfair point system used for the TF question.
    (01/17) 5pm: The question on the exam which no student answered completely was Problem 3(b) asking for square matrices satisfying AB-BA = I. This question was worth 3 marks, and 2 of them were awarded for noticing that tr(AB-BA) = tr(AB)-tr(BA) = 0. The last point was awarded for noticing that tr(I) can actually be 0, when the field has positive characteristic. In fact there are solutions to this equation over a finite field. For example, you may want to look for 2x2 matrices with coefficients in the finite field with 2 elements.
    (01/17) 2pm: The average is 65. Slightly surprisingly the TF question was one of the most poorly done questions, with an average below 3.5. Yikes!

    March 31 to April 4, 2008 at the American Institute of Mathematics , Palo Alto, California organized by Anuj Dawar, Phokion Kolaitis, Benoit Larose, and Matt Valeriote This workshop, sponsored by AIM and the NSF , will be devoted to advancing the understanding of the computational complexity of the constraint satisfaction problem using methods and techniques from universal algebra and logic. The intended participants are researchers in computational complexity, universal algebra, and logic. By bringing together researchers from these three areas, progress could be made towards resolving long-standing open problems about the complexity of constraint satisfaction. The most prominent such problem is the Dichotomy Conjecture formulated by Feder and Vardi in 1993, which asserts that, for every constraint language C over an arbitrary finite domain, either the constraint satisfaction problem CSP(C) is in P or it is NP-complete. The main topics for the workshop are:
    • Constraint satisfaction and universal algebra: Closure properties of constraints, Mal'cev conditions, tame congruence theory and the local structure of finite algebras.

The professor would stand in front of the room, half asleep, and write: cared about eigenvectors. Years later, in a computer vision class, I finally learned to care about linear algebra. It could solve all sorts of cool problems! ( Eigenfaces My ideal linear algebra textbook would:
  • Include plenty of motivating examples. Show how to solve real-world problems. Devote plenty of time to proofs.
