22. Fermat, Computer Algebra System
Computer algebra system that does arithmetic of arbitrarily long integers and fractions, symbolic calculations, graphics, and other numerical calculations.
http://home.bway.net/lewis/
Above graphic created with the float version of Fermat.
Fermat is a computer algebra system for Macintosh, Windows, Linux, and Unix by me, Robert H. Lewis of Fordham University, that does arithmetic of arbitrarily long integers and fractions, symbolic calculations, matrices over polynomial rings, graphics, and other numerical calculations. It is extremely fast and extremely economical of space. The main version that I care most about is oriented toward polynomial and matrix algebra over the rationals Q and finite fields. On the Mac side, there is a version for OS X and versions for OS 9. There is also a "float" version for graphics. All versions are available here.
Fermat is a state-of-the-art research tool for real problems.
    See for example:
Compare Your Computer Algebra System. Take the Fermat Tests!
There are now five tests. One test involves evaluation of rational functions, the second involves Smith Normal Form, the third resultants, the fourth rational function arithmetic, the fifth a multivariate determinant.
Fermat is freeware. Those who have grant money are requested to contribute $60 per installed machine.

What is QuickMath?
QuickMath is an automated service for answering common math problems over the internet. Think of it as an online calculator that solves equations and does all sorts of algebra and calculus problems - instantly and automatically! When you submit a question to QuickMath, it is processed by Mathematica, the largest and most powerful computer algebra package available today. The answer is then sent back to you and displayed right there on your browser, usually within a couple of seconds. Best of all, QuickMath is 100% free !
What can QuickMath do?
QuickMath will automatically answer the most common problems in algebra, equations and calculus faced by high-school and college students.
  • The algebra section allows you to expand, factor or simplify virtually any expression you choose. It also has commands for splitting fractions into partial fractions, combining several fractions into one and cancelling common factors within a fraction.
The equations section lets you solve an equation or system of equations. You can usually find the exact answer or, if necessary, a numerical answer to almost any accuracy you require.

26. Geometric Algebra For Computer Science
This is the companion site to the book Geometric Algebra For Computer Science, An Object Oriented Approach to Geometry, published by Morgan Kaufmann
http://www.geometricalgebra.net/
LEO DORST DANIEL FONTIJNE STEPHEN MANN Come to AGACSE2010, June 14-16, 2010, in Amsterdam and meet the authors! This is the companion site to the book Geometric Algebra For Computer Science, An Object Oriented Approach to Geometry , published by Morgan Kaufmann Publishers
Here you can find a preview and tour of the book, and download extra content . We provide interactive versions of almost all figures in the book, source code for the programming exercises , some of the answers to the structural exercises , and we correct errors in the book. Geometric algebra is a consistent computational framework for geometric programming. It has new, geometrically meaningful products to calculate directly with the subspaces of a vector space. This capability considerably reinforces and extends the linear algebra techniques traditionally used in computer graphics and robotics. It naturally integrates other useful frameworks (such as complex numbers, quaternions and ) into real geometry. The result is a high-level specification language for geometrical operations that can be executed directly. Constructions that used to require matrices or coordinate manipulations can now be expressed immediately in terms of the geometric quantities that define them. Moreover, since all this exists within one unified framework, no processing time is wasted on data conversions from one mathematical system to another.

    What is Axiom?
Axiom is a general purpose Computer Algebra system. It is useful for research and development of mathematical algorithms. It defines a strongly typed, mathematically correct type hierarchy. It has a programming language and a built-in compiler. Axiom has been in development since 1971. At that time, it was called Scratchpad. Scratchpad was a large, general purpose computer algebra system that was originally developed by IBM under the direction of Richard Jenks. The project started in 1971 and evolved slowly. Barry Trager was key to the technical direction of the project. Scratchpad developed over a 20 year stretch and was basically considered as a research platform for developing new ideas in computational mathematics. In the 1990s, as IBM's fortunes slid, the Scratchpad project was renamed to Axiom, sold to the Numerical Algorithms Group (NAG) in England and became a commercial system. As part of the Scratchpad project at IBM in Yorktown Tim Daly worked on all aspects of the system and eventually helped transfer the product to NAG. For a variety of reasons it never became a financial success and NAG withdrew it from the market in October, 2001.

REDUCE is an interactive system for general algebraic computations of interest to mathematicians, scientists and engineers. It has been produced by a collaborative effort involving many contributors . Its capabilities include: expansion and ordering of polynomials and rational functions; substitutions and pattern matching in a wide variety of forms; automatic and user controlled simplification of expressions; calculations with symbolic matrices; arbitrary precision integer and real arithmetic; facilities for defining new functions and extending program syntax; analytic differentiation and integration; factorization of polynomials; facilities for the solution of a variety of algebraic equations; facilities for the output of expressions in a variety of formats; facilities for generating optimized numerical programs from symbolic input; calculations with a wide variety of special functions; Dirac matrix calculations of interest to high energy physicists. It is often used as an algebraic calculator for problems that are possible to do by hand. However, REDUCE is designed to support calculations that are not feasible by hand. Many such calculations take a significant time to set up and can run for minutes, hours or even days on the most powerful computers.
