Welcome
This is the personal website of William Tunstall-Pedoe I'm a British, AI entrepreneur . I'm currently based in Cambridge, England I am currently employed full time on an exciting internet technology start-up which I founded. I am the only person to succeed in programming a computer to solve cryptic crossword puzzles. I developed the Crossword Maestro technology that can not only solve a significant majority of commercially published clues but also explains how the clues work in plain English. ( More details I am also the developer of the Anagram Genius software. This applies artificial intelligence techniques to the task of finding relevent, amusing anagrams of any subject and is widely accepted as unique. The software is on its ninth major version and has a development history starting in 1988. It has been used directly by approximately five million people and is responsible for most of the high quality anagrams that have been discovered in the last fifteen years. One of these users was Dan Brown who used it to create the anagrams in the Da Vinci Code book and movie (and credited me). Many tens of millions of further people have been exposed to the software indirectly, perhaps by seeing some of the anagrams it created. ( More details.

NEWS
The forum is now open. We now have a new machine to use for the web server. We received an old Acer Aspire T320 which has a 160 GB ATA disk in it. It needs DDR RAM which is in short supply after the Pentium IV failed. The CPU is a Celeron 335 running at 2.8 GHz which will speed up the server considerably. It has everything integrated making it server friendly. We ordered a PCI SATA and ATA controller. This can be helpful as it has 2 internal SATA ports, an ATA133 port and an external SATA port that is not eSATA. It cost all of $1 but postage was $3 from Hong Kong. This can be of use on the Acer to attach a SATA disk. We expect it to be delivered week of Dec. 1-5 based on average postal service from Hong Kong. We will then be able to use a large disk for supporting more torrents. We have an available 320 GB SATA disk, but the Acer lacks anywhere to mount the disk. There is a lot of room under the HD where a disk could be attached. We are still looking for an AMD AM2/AM2+/AM3 CPU for the M2NBP-VM board we have available. This will be much better for serving a chess site. Tablebases are rather large even today many do not want to keep 6 pieces on their gaming machine. Bigger disks are available but the MBR limit is another problem.

Update
I am happy there are so many people asking for new updates, so here is a small update on what is going on.
When I get to work on Mediocre I always do it 100% of my time, which means many updates in a short time. This is the only way I know how to work on a project, since I need to keep everything in my head (I guess I am not a very organized person in general).
As I am a full time computer science student working on my last year of my education there is little time for anything but studies.
However, this project will never be abandoned, atleast not in a foreseeable future. There will just be times where it is resting for longer or shorter periods.
Upcoming updates
I have a version that is (and has been for some time) basically ready for release, including ponder and some other nifty things.
Also people have mentioned that the memory usage is a bit sketchy and I will have to take a look at that.
So in summary, there will be updates for Mediocre in the future, but I really can't tell you when. But it will not be another 6 months, that is for sure. :)

This page is dedicated to my computer program "Brute Force", a chess-playing program that participated in the 8th and 9th North American Computer Chess Championships in 1977 and 1978. I hope you find this presentation interesting, especially from a historical viewpoint. I also present several challenges to current computer chess programmers, and in so doing, hope that these can stimulate new thoughts in the advances of computer chess programming and artificial intelligence. next contents my pages

The Beginnings of a Chess-playing Program
I was fortunate enough to have entered high school at the beginning of the computer revolution. In 1972, our city's high schools were provided access to a Control Data Corporation mainframe computer. The access was via a card reader and printer in our school. We had two keypunches and the students were allowed to keypunch programs onto cards, submit the cards via the card reader, and wait a few minutes for the program listing and output to be returned and printed. I immediately took to this, card punching programs in the FORTRAN programming language for all sorts of things. I starting keeping statistics for my touch football team. I set up a school date-matching service, and had everyone in school - students and teachers included - fill out an Optical Mark Reading (OMR) card answering questions about themselves and what they would like in their date. I even figured out a way to simulate a hockey game complete with team and individual scoring statistics; we had 12 friends each pick a team and I simulated a complete 72 game professional hockey season, posting the game summaries, team standings, and scoring stats each week.
