    If you are a member of this School, then you can look at real, live, code for a chess-playing program in the directory /maths/staff/anw/chess/Notchess on the School's computers. Otherwise, you may be able to explore an equivalent directory using anonymous ftp . The version there is not my current version, and in particular the static evaluation is very limited. You should be warned that Notchess was written some years ago, and the old version you have access to has not been developed since then; there are much better freebie programs around now, especially if you want a seriously strong opponent.

    Up to: Main McCarthy page I complained in my Science review of Monty Newborn's Deep Blue vs. Kasparov that the tournament oriented work on computer chess was not contributing as much to the science of AI as it should. AI has two tools for tackling problems. One is to use methods observed in humans, often observed only by introspection, and the other is to invent methods using ideas of computer science without worrying about whether humans do it this way. Chess programming employs both. Introspection is an unreliable way of determining how humans think, but introspectively suggested methods are valid as AI if they work. Much of the mental computation done by chess players is invisible to the player and to outside observers. Patterns in the position suggest what lines of play to look at, and the pattern recognition processes in the human mind seem to be invisible to that mind. However, the parts of the move tree that are examined are consciously accessible. It is an important advantage of chess as a Drosophila for AI that so much of the thought that goes into human chess play is visible to the player and even to spectators. When chess players argue about what is the right move in a position, they follow out lines of play, i.e. argue explicitly about parts of the move tree. Moreover, when a player is found to have made a mistake, it is almost always a failure to follow out a certain line of play rather than a misevaluation of a final position.

    Aart occasionally works on his UCI chess engine, called BikJump. Here, UCI stands for Universal Chess Interface , designed by Stefan Meyer-Kahlen and Rudolf Huber as an open interface between a chess engine and a graphical chess program. The UCI approach allows aspirant chess programmers to focus on writing the chess engine, leaving details such as board setup and play, clock and notation display, and possibly opening book and root-level endgame tablebases play to the graphical chess program.     By Jonathan Yedidia The best chess playing entity in the world today is almost certainly the computer program developed primarily by International Master Vasik Rajlich Rybka currently tops all the computer chess rating lists . Since Rybka is pretty clearly stronger than the Deep Fritz program that defeated World Champion Vladimir Kramnik 4-2 last year Arena GUI. First, it is only available for Windows (and Linux using Wine ), and I wanted a program for Mac OS X. The strongest program for Macs is clearly Hiarcs 11 , developed by Mark Uniacke. Although Hiarcs 11 seems to be somewhat weaker than Rybka, it is still stronger than Deep Fritz, and any human being. Most importantly, on Macs, Hiarcs is paired with the very nice chess , although I have no personal experience with this.) Amazingly, at whatever level you choose, Hiarcs plays a very human-like game. Previous computer programs, when weakened, played poorly strategically, but still did not make tactical errors. A weakened Hiarcs will make tactical mistakes that you can take advantage of, and will also play at an appropriate level of strategic understanding, so there is no particular reason to adopt anti-computer approaches when playing against it. Of course, Hiarcs comes with many other features, including the ability to use it to analyze your games. Most grandmasters use these programs to aid in their training, and Hiarcs is well-known as one of the best engines to use.

  • The History of Computer Chess By Mary Bellis Dr. Dietrich Prinz wrote the original chess playing program for a general purpose computer (the Manchester Ferranti ). The program first ran in November 1951. Prinz was a researcher at Manchester University in England where the groundbreaking Mark I, Mark II, the Ferranti Mk computers were designed and built. Previously, special purpose machines designed only for playing chess had been invented. Dietrich Prinz was familiar with the chess-playing machine built by Torres y Quevedo. Prinz decided to work on the programming necessary to make a regular computer play chess. The early computers of 1950s have little of the computing power or memory compared to modern computers. The limitations of a Mark series computer did not allow for a whole game of chess to be programmed. Prinz could only program mate-in-two problems. The program would examine every possible move until a solution was found and took an average of fifteen minutes to do so, today's computers can solve the same problem in a fraction of a second. However, for its time Prinz's program was a marvel. The first checker-playing program was written by Christopher Strachey. It ran on the Ferranti Mark I in the Manchester Computing Machine Laboratory and was completed in 1952. Strachey was able to program an entire game of checkers

    As this book shows, distributed-memory, multiple-instruction stream (MIMD) computers are successful in performing a large class of scientific computations. As discussed in Section and the earlier chapters, these synchronous and loosely synchronous problems tend to have regular, homogeneous data sets and the algorithms are usually ``crystalline'' in nature. Recognizing this, C P explored a set of algorithms which had irregular structure (as in Chapter ) and asynchronous execution. At the start of this study, we were very unclear as to what parallel performance to expect. In fact, we achieved good speedup even in these hard problems. Thus, as an attempt to explore a part of this interesting, poorly understood region in algorithm space, we implemented chess on an nCUBE-1 hypercube. Besides being a fascinating field of study in its own right, computer chess is an interesting challenge for parallel computers because:
