Fuzzy mathematics forms a branch of mathematics related to fuzzy set theory and fuzzy logic . It started in 1965 after the publication of Lotfi Asker Zadeh 's seminal work Fuzzy sets A fuzzy subset A of a set X is a function A:X→L , where L is the interval [0,1]. This function is also called a membership function. A membership function is a generalization of a characteristic function or an indicator function of a subset defined for L L in a definition of a fuzzy subset A The evolution of the fuzzification of mathematical concepts can be broken into three stages:
  • straightforward fuzzification during the sixties and seventies, the explosion of the possible choices in the generalization process during the eighties, the standardization, axiomatization and L-fuzzification in the nineties.
  • Usually, a fuzzification of mathematical concepts is based on a generalization of these concepts from characteristic functions to membership functions. Let

July 1, 2002 The "Fuzzy Math" of Fluoride Promotion By Paul Connett, PhD (ggvideo@northnet.org) Many of you may have probably heard the term "fuzzy math" before. It is a term used to describe a somewhat controversial method of teaching math where the answers do not have to be EXACTLY right. But at the very least, they are supposed to be close. Unfortunately, many of those promoting the practice of water fluoridation would fail to meet even these basic "fuzzy math" guidelines, with methods better described as "hairy" than "fuzzy". And "fuzzy math" is supposed to be a temporary teaching tool for young children, NOT a permanent way of doing business or a method used to change the data to whatever suits your agenda. While I was in New Zealand recently, I was sent some literature, better described as a propaganda package, from the Australian Dental Association entitled "Fluoridation: Nature Thought of it First". My response to that title was that I completely agree. "Nature" did indeed think of it first, and wisely spotted that fluoride was very toxic. That is why "Nature" limits the level of fluoride in mother's milk to 0.01 ppm (parts per million), which is 100 times less than most of the levels at which water is fluoridated in the few "not so bright" countries which continue this foolish practice.

    An introduction to fuzzy math
Fuzzy math differs from conventional math primarily in the area of set theory. For example in a conventional AND statement both statements must be true for the statement to be true. However, in fuzzy logic statements are not always true or false, they merely have varying levels of confidence. The table below exibits the differences in how an AND statement is applied in conventional and fuzzy systems. As can clearly be seen the AND statement in a fuzzy system is merely the minimum confidence value of the two values. conventional fuzzy A B A AND B Fuzzy A Fuzzy B A AND B
The OR statement is also different in a fuzzy system as opposed to a conventional system. Once again the table below demonstrates how an OR statement functions in both a conventional and fuzzy system. The table demonstrates that the OR statement returns the maximum value of its two operatives. Thus, the OR is essentially the opposite of the AND statement, under a fuzzy system. conventional fuzzy A B A AND B Fuzzy A Fuzzy B A AND B
The concept of the fuzzy set is also key to many applications of fuzzy logic. A set in conventional mathematics is very simple. A set is merely a collection of numbers or things. However, in fuzzy math the definition of a set is slightly different. A fuzzy set is a list of values, which describes to what degree an object belongs to a variety of characteristics. The fuzzy set listed below is an example of how a variety of temperatures might be classified.

Have you been befuddled by educational jargon such as "spiraling," which is used to explain why your kid keeps bringing home the same insipid busywork of cutting, gluing and drawing? And are you alarmed by teachers who emphasize "self-confidence" over proficiency while their students fall further and further behind? Join the club. Across the country, from New York City to Seattle, parents are wising up to math fads like "Everyday Math." Sounds harmless enough, right? It's cleverly marketed as a "University of Chicago" program. Impressive! Right? But then you start to sense something's not adding up when your kid starts second grade and comes home with the same kindergarten-level addition and subtraction problems for the second year in a row. And then your child keeps telling you that the teacher isn't really teaching anything, just handing out useless worksheets some of which make no sense to parents with business degrees, medical degrees and Ph.D.s specializing in econometric analysis. And then you notice that it's the University of Chicago education department, not the mathematics department, that is behind this nonsense.

David Gelernter, NY Post Mathematics achievement in America is far below what we would like it to be. Recent " reform " efforts only aggravate the problem. As a result, our children have less and less exposure to rigorous, content-rich mathematics . The advocates of the new, fuzzy math have practiced their rhetoric well. They speak of higher-order thinking, conceptual understanding and solving problems, but they neglect the systematic mastery of the fundamental building blocks necessary for success in any of these areas. Their focus is on things like calculators, blocks, guesswork, and group activities and they shun things like algorithms and repeated practice. The new programs are shy on fundamentals and they also lack the mathematical depth and rigor that promotes greater achievement. Concerned parents are in a state of dismay and have begun efforts to restore content, rigor, and genuinely high expectations to mathematics education. This site provides relevant background and information for parents, teachers, board members and the public from around the country.
