Home F fuzzword fyborg ... fuzzy math n . Mathematics education that de-emphasizes memorization and rote learning in favor of a cooperative approach to solving problems. Example Citation: "A method that disdains the notion of adults hierarchically imparting knowledge to kids, integrated math does not require students to memorize multiplication tables, compute fractions or learn other basic skills essential to algebraic success. It's often rightly derided as ' fuzzy math ' because of its murky goals, which include, according to one popular integrated math program, 'linking past experience to new concepts, sharing ideas and developing concept readiness through hands-on explorations.'"
Los Angeles Times , January 29, 2000 Notes: This new approach to teaching math first appeared in the late 80s, and it didn't take long for the various names applied to it to split into two camps. Those in favor of the new methodology called it "constructivist," "integrated math," "whole math," or "new new math." Those opposed labeled it "fuzzy math" (which first appeared in 1994), "Mickey Mouse math," "math lite," or "algebra lite." Related Words: edubabble

According to the anti-immigration group NumbersUSA , immigration to the United States is all about arithmetic: immigration increases the U.S. population, and more people presumably means more pollution, more urban sprawl, more competition for jobs, and higher taxes for Americans who must shoulder the costs of “over-population.” At first glance, this argument is attractive in its simplicity: less immigration, fewer people, a better environment, more jobs, lower taxes. However, as with so many simple arguments about complex topics, it is fundamentally flawed and misses the point. “Over-population” is not the primary cause of the environmental or economic woes facing the United States, so arbitrary restrictions on immigration will not create a cleaner environment or a healthier economy. People and Pollution Are Not the Same
  • NumbersUSA claims that “stabilizing” the U.S. population is essential to creating a cleaner environment. However, environmental destruction is not directly correlated with population size, even in countries with similar standards of living.

The Ribald Reign of King George the Second
George W. Bush's Fuzzy Math
Soon after the Supreme Court decision that led Al Gore to concede the presidential election to George W. Bush, I wrote an article entitled Bush Wins, Bush Loses . In the article, I compared George W. Bush to Daffy Duck for the way that he has been duped into accepting a job so difficult that only an idiot would take it. The whole point of the article is that the difficulty of the political situation and President George Junior's inexperience, inarticulateness and general inability will combine to make him the least remarkable person to inhabit the Oval Office in American History. Well, it's not too surprising that a large number of the Republican faithful disagreed with me. Even less surprising is the fuzzy math that they used to justify their angry responses. Typical is the following, from a Republican who goes by the name of poetwarrior. This GOP guy writes, "I dissent. Well-written but not a very honest diatribe. Remember: half the country voted for this man." Now, I ask you: what's not honest about saying 1st that George W. Bush is not very smart and 2nd that he's got a very difficult job ahead of him? Honesty hurts sometimes.

Connecticut’s lawmakers fudge the state budget

Hartford, Conn. – Question 1: Connecticut needs $8.8 billion to balance its budget. Should the state A) raise taxes or B) cut spending? Democrats, who control two-thirds of the legislature, say the answer is both of the above. But Governor Jodi Rell, a Republican, says raising taxes is the wrong choice. On prudence, Rell scores high: Raising taxes will slow the recovery, so the state should cut spending instead.
“We need to conserve the services that are absolutely necessary to our economy,” said State Senator Mary Ann Handley, a Democrat. But which services are “necessary”? Though Democrats sliced $2 billion from the budget, they saved items that were less than essential, like $12 million for the Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities and $1 million for the Latino and Puerto Rican Affairs Commission. When the state is losing money, it should keep the agencies that provide services, not the commissions that provide forums.
State Representative Ryan Barry, a Democrat, defends the commissions: “They are advocating for people who can’t afford lobbyists.” True, but the state is cutting services at the same time that it is paying commissioners up to $150,000 per year. For example, Rell wants to cut $1.4 million in subsidies for a LIFE STAR helicopter at Hartford Hospital. She could pay for this item with money saved by closing commissions. Then, Democrats could say they cut the fat before reaching into taxpayers’ pockets. Besides, most people would take a helicopter over a lobbyist.
