Fly Tying Knots
Basic Advice on Tying Knots
It is important not only to select the right knot for a particular job but to tie it properly. Poorly Tied knots will mean lost fish and aggravation. Here are a few basic steps to follow when tying all knots for fly fishing. Lubricate knots: Before you tighten a knot, lubricate it with saliva or by dipping it in the water. This will help the knot slide and seat properly. Lubrication also decreases excessive heat which dramatically weakens monofilament. Heat is generated by the friction created when knots are drawn up tight. Seat the knot: Tighten knots with a steady, continuous pull. Make sure the knot is tight and secure. After it is tied, pull on the line and leader to make sure it holds. It is better to test it now than when a fish is on. Trim neatly: Use nippers to trim the material as close as possible without nicking or damaging the knot.

Knots are pure magic. I mean, you take this length of cord, twirl it into an esoteric shape and amazing things happen. A knot will keep you in place, let you descend slowly, and even untie itself only when needed. Magic, pure and simple. Sometimes, though, that magic can bite. Let's take a simple situation which we've all encountered, namely, joining two runners. Everybody uses a girth hitch, right? Well, maybe you should reconsider that. The girth hitch can reduce the strength of your runner combination to 66% of the strength of a runner/biner/runner combination. Toss in a spectra/nylon runner combination and you're potentially working with a setup that will fail at 10kN or less. Use THAT in an anchor and it could fail with the 6kN shock force generated by a leader fall onto a soft catch rope. *SNAP*. For all their versatility and magic, knots do something badthey bend the rope. If you doubt this is bad, take a moment to think of a knife as a device that causes an unusually SHARP bend. The sharper the bend, the weaker the rope. So any knot will weaken that lifeline of yours.

Current trends ClassesClasses on Chinese Knotting are generally available at bead stores, senior citizen centers, craft stores, art centers and a few oriental art novelty shops. Books availableMore books are in print about macramé than Chinese Knotting. My mentor on knotting (a Chinese native) could only find one printed in English just on Chinese Knotting. I recommend these two for the most rounded information: Encyclopedia of Knots and Fancy Rope Work, by Raoul Graumont and John Hensel; and Chines Knotting from Echo Craft Books. Some information can be found in various other art or craft books. What is on the marketsome novelty shops carry original hand knotted ornaments and jewelry. Thee will invariably be made from nylon or rayon cord. I have enclosed samples of this type of work. Imported from the orient are talisman hung on knotted cords, sample 1 . Nordstrom's carried a machine knitted suit with knotted embellishments in the winter of 1990. Enhancements for the futureThere is room for knotting in most facets of fiber art. After this study, I feel it can be incorporated into any project I desire.

    Knots: How to Tie Knots
All about knots: This website contains descriptions and illustrations on tying over 35 knots, including: bowline knots, half hitch knot, overhand knot, hitch knot and many more! Knots are intertwined loops of rope, cord, string or other flexible material, used to fasten two such ropes to one another or to another object. Knots Bends Hitches Splices and Seizings are all ways of fastening cords or ropes, either to some other object such as a spar, or a ring, or to one another. The knot is formed to make a knob on a rope, generally at the extremity, and by untwisting the strands at the end and weaving them together. But it may be made by turning the rope on itself through a loop, as for instance, the overhand knot.  A bend and a hitch are ways of fastening or tying ropes together, as in the Carrick bend or round spars as the Studding Sail Halyard Bend and the Timber Hitch.  A splice is made by untwisting two rope ends and weaving them together.

    Uni-Knot
This uni-knot is one of the best knots around withstanding sudden jerks better than other knots. Very strong and can be used in a number of applications although it is most commonly used for tying fishing line to terminal tackle.
The uni-knot works with both braided lines as well as monofilament fishing lines.
The knot can be tied directly to the hooks eye in the traditional manner or the knot can be tied as a loop. Instead of sliding the knot all the way to the eye simply slide it to the size loop desired. Then, gripping the loop just forward of the hook eye and pull firmly on the tag end when the loop is at the desired size. This locks the uni-knot around the standing line.
    Fishing Tie Knots
    Uni-Knot Snell Version
This a a version of the uni-knot that is snelled. This puts the knot below the eye of the hook where it is protected from abrasion. The angle of pull on the hook is also slightly different than a regular non-snelled hook with is slightly better for setting the hook.
