The Moebius Strip in VRML
The mathematician A. F. Moebius (1790-1886) discovered this one-sided surface that became known as the Moebius Strip or Moebius Band. The artists M. C. Escher (1898-1972) was intrigued by the strip's puzzling geometry and included a procession of ants crawling along a Moebius Band in his collection of drawings depicting spatial illusions. The Moebius Strip, however, is not an illusion. It can be modeled in 3D and its topological features can be explored using an interactive computer model. Inspired by Escher's work, Bert Schoenwaelder created this unique VRML application with an animated procession of balls during his internship at the University of Michigan Virtual Reality Laboratory.

Main Features A simple endless band in the form of belt-shaped loop (below left) has two distinct surfaces and two edges. Moving from one surface to the opposite site requires crossing one of the edges. The Moebius Strip is an endless band that includes a half twist (below right). Amazingly, the band has only one surface and only one edge. Moving along the surface (like Escher's ants) will bring you to the opposite site without crossing the edge.

Make a never-ending, one-sided shape.
How to do it
  • All you need is some paper, tape and a pair of scissors. First, cut out a long, thin strip of paper. Holding it the tall way, label the top left corner "A," the top right corner "B," the bottom left corner "C," and the bottom right corner "D." Give the strip a twist and tape the two ends together so that "A" touches "D" and "B" touches "C." Now check this out. If you start drawing a line around the strip, you'll end up right back where you started. See it doesn't have a front or a back! The top and the bottom are the same. The twist in the strip connects what was the top to the bottom, making one big side. What's really interesting about this strip is all the things you can do with it. Start cutting your strip down the middle, like you are cutting two, thinner strips. But you don't get two! You end up with a much larger, thinner Mobius Strip.

Title: Tuning of electron transport through a moebius strip: shot noise
Authors: Santanu K. Maiti (Submitted on 7 Oct 2009) Abstract: We explore electron transport through a moebius strip attached to two metallic electrodes by the use of Green's function technique. A parametric approach is used based on the tight-binding model to characterize the electron transport through such a bridge system and it is observed that the transport properties are significantly affected by (a) the transverse hopping strength between the two channels and (b) the strip-to-electrode coupling strength. In this context we also describe the noise power of the current fluctuations that provides a key information about the electron correlation which is obtained by calculating the Fano factor ($F$). The knowledge of this current fluctuations gives important ideas for fabrication of efficient electronic devices. Comments: 9 pages, 8 figures

    Cognitive Egocentrism
COGNITIVE EGOCENTRISM The projection of one’s own mentality or “way of seeing the world” onto others, e.g., the teenager who is obsessed with sex, and assumes the same about everyone else. In the current situation of globalization, cognitive egocentrism has its greatest impact in the political relationships between people coming from civil societies and those raised in prime divider societies. Since the basic political principle of Prime divider societies is “rule or be ruled,” “do onto others before they do onto you,” political actors from those cultures assume the same zero-sum , domineering intentions in their opponents (the “enemy”). Since the basic political principles of civil societies is “I’ll give up trying to dominate and trust you to give it up as well,” “if I’m nice to you, you will be nice in return,” assume positive-sum attitudes in their opponents (the “other”). The current situation testifies to a dangerous mis-apprehension that works to the distinct disadvantage to civil society. The media, in particular, as the representative of civil society, emphasizes its role as empathizer, often failing to defend civil society, even exposing it to danger.
LIBERAL COGNITIVE EGOCENTRISM (LCE): The projection of good faith and fair-mindedness onto others, the assumption that “other” shares the same human values, that everyone prefers positive sum interactions. In a slightly more redemptive mode, LCE holds that all people are good, and if only we treat them right, they will respond well. This is a form of empathy that, like

The Mobius Strip was discovered in 1858 by German mathematician and astronomer August Ferdinand Mobius (1790-1868). The mathematical equation is known as The Mobius Transformation, also known as bilinear transformation or linear fractional transformation. (Webster's dictionary:" A map of the complex plane to itself in which a point "z" is mapped to a point "w" by w=(az+b)/(cz+d), where a,b,c, and d are complex numbers and ad-bc does not equal zero.") It is a continuous loop with one surface and one edge formed by twisting one end of a long, thin rectangular strip 180 degrees (1/2 twist) and attaching this end to the other. This fascinating shape expresses Transformation. Today the Mobius Strip has been chosen as the Universal symbol of recycling. It represents the process of transforming waste materials into useful resources. On a personal level, the Mobius strip represents a willingness to move WITH the constantly changing cycles in our Life process, transforming our challenges into useful solutions. The Mobius Strip reveals planetary transformation,as well. Historically, there has always been Earth
changes,i.e. natural re-structuring of land and ocean masses, tide changes, weather changes, seasonal changes, etc. The Mobius Strip shape is symbolic of eternal change within stillness itself.

    Möbius Strip
The Möbius Strip is an interesting surface. It locally looks like any other surface. Close-up we see a 2-dimensional object. The surface becomes more interesting when we try to decide how many sides this surface has. If we take a flat piece of paperr, then we can easily convince ourselves that it has exactly 2 sides. We could for instance color one side of our paper blue and the other side red, and we would never run into any problem. This is not true for the Möbius Strip however. If we would take a marker and start coloring one side of the Möbius Strip we would realize after a while that after we had colored that side, we had colored the entire surface! In other words this is a one-sided surface. It is actually very easy to create a Möbius Strip for one's self. Take a strip of paper and glue the ends together after giving the strip a half-twist. This proces is illustrated in the figure below:
