Introduction:
One of the most famous surfaces in mathematics, the Möbius (MeR-bee-us) strip can be constructed by cutting a long strip of paper, putting a half twist in it, and gluing the ends of the strip together. What makes this seemingly ordinary construct so fascinating is that, while the original strip of paper clearly had two sides, the Möbius strip seems to have only one. Try to draw a line on both "sides" without picking up your pencil. It's actually quite simple. non-orientable . That is, when we define a surface normal at a point, it is impossible to extend the definition to the whole surface. The picture below illustrates that by "sliding" a given surface normal along the strip, without picking it up, we can get a surface normal that points in the opposite direction. Thus any attempt to give the surface a "front" and a "back" must fail. Cylinder This representation has the advantage of being quite easy to draw on a flat sheet of paper, and it also leads to some natural questions about other interesting surfaces.     Envisioning Currere: Two Sides Becoming One
    I've been thinking about how I wanted to present my final currere , my perceptions of curriculum and how I can invite others into the "complicated conversation." In researching articles on curriculum and currere , I ran across a favorite model of mine, the Moebius strip. I thought about how curriculum to me is a dynamic, evolving process, a process that has no beginning and no end, that could be considered a circle. Also, the concept of turning two sides into one sounded like a learning challenge, perfect for thinking about the complexities of curriculum.
    So, I cut out a strip of paper and began writing words/phrases about what curriculum should be on both sides. But then I thought more deeply about the sides of the strip and what they might represent. I thought that one side could reflect my personal beliefs. The outside could represent how I feel our schools interpret curriculum. I thought this was pretty clever, so I proceeded to make my third Moebius strip, throwing out the previous two. Now, I thought . . . how should I present this?
    I wanted to present this idea in a way that would demonstrate how I thought learning should take place in the schools. So, I planned a learning experience that had no right or wrong answersone that required each of my classmates to create and interpret their own Moebius strip, to come up with possible explanantions of its meaning(s).     The great thing about non-orientable surfaces, and Moebius bands in particular, is their omnipresence. We guarantee you that by the time you have gone through this unit on non-orientable surfaces, you will see Klein bottles and Moebius strips everywhere. At least, that’s what happened to us. You have by now gotten a glimpse of the mathematics of non-orientable surfaces, and if you are confused about how to apply the mathematics to other areas, we suggest that you keep the following phrase in mind: a Moebius band is a loop with a twist. In other words, when you find a situation where you have come back to step one with a twist, it is shaped as a Moebius strip . We found several examples in literature where the subject of the narrative is non-orientables surfaces (mainly Moebius strips), or where the narrative itself takes the shape of a moebius strip. The most accessible are the first, and the two we chose to include in our course are “The No-sided Professor,” by Martin Gardner, and “A Subway Named Moebius,” by A.J. Deutsch. They can both be found in the collection of short stories called Fantasia Mathematica , assembled by Clifton Fadiman.

The characteristic feature of Möbius strip is that it is a surface with single side. In its most simplest form a Moebius strip can be constructed out a a strip of paper which is twisted halfway and the ends joined together. If one were to start tracing a surface, by the time they complete one trace they find that they are tracing the opposite side of the paper than the one from which they started.     • Step 0: Have ready glue, paste, or tape to use in connecting the ends of the paper. Step 1: Cut a rectangular strip of paper in which the length is 10 to 11 times the width. In the picture above, the ends of the strip have been labeled so the top edge on each end is A and the bottom edge on each end is B. Step 2: Hold each end of the long rectangular strip in front of you, one end in each hand, so as to almost form a bracelet or cylinder. Step 3: Rather than forming the bracelet or cylinder, hold one end in place and twist the other end a half-twist so the original top edge - A - of the twisted end lines up with the original bottom edge - B - of the other end. Step 4: Tape, glue, or paste the two ends together so as to form a twisted strip of paper. This is a Moebius strip.
    Activities:
    • Place the point of a pencil on the surface of the Moebius strip and draw a line (as down the center of a road) until you reach the end. Take a pair of scissors and snip a hold on this line, insert the scissors and carefully cut along the line drawn down the center of the Moebius strip. Construct another Moebius strip. Rather than cutting the strip down the center as in the last activity, cut 1/3 of the way from an edge.
