Geometry
The term geometry is derived from the Greek word geometria, Humans have probably used concepts from geometry as long as civilization has existed. But the subject did not become a real science until about the sixth century B.C. B.C. ), who wrote a book called Elements. This work was the standard textbook in the field for more than 2,000 years, and the basic ideas of geometry are still referred to as Euclidean geometry.
Elements of geometry
Statements. One axiom is that a single straight line, and only one, can be drawn through two points. Another axiom is that two parallel lines (lines running next to each other like train tracks) will never meet, no matter how far they are extended into space. Indeed, mathematicians accepted these statements as true without trying to prove them for 2,000 years. Statements such as these form the basis of Euclidean geometry. However, the vast majority of statements in geometry are not axioms but propositions. A proposition is a statement that can be proved or disproved. In fact, it is not too much of a stretch to say that geometry is a branch of mathematics committed to proving propositions.

OpenSCAD: Constructive solid geometry CAD at long last
My first introduction to 3D modelling, way back in 1999, was ray-tracing with the classic freeware Persistence of Vision (POV-Ray) package . The whole point of POV-Ray was (and is) to program a virtual 3D scene that can be rendered into still images very slowly, but in amazing detail, using ray-tracing algorithms. It was never about producing models for 3D printing or other computer-assisted manufacture techniques. But what was cool about POV-Ray was that, at least in its native implementation, there was no GUI or WYSIWYG interface. To make POV-Ray models, you used a text editor to program objects using so-called "constructive solid geometry" (CSG) techniques, in which complex forms were built up as unions, differences, and/or intersections of "primitive" shapes like cubes, circles, and prisms. It was all done in a special programming language native to the POV-Ray environment. To see what you'd made, you had to render the file. Almost a decade later, when I started messing around with modern 3D modelling software for the purpose of rapid prototyping, I was disappointed to discover that my POV-Ray CSG skills did not port. Everything was resource-hungry interactive WYSIWYG interfacing, which definitely has its advantages, but also typically has a pretty steep learning curve as you learn just to move around the virtual 3D space of the modelling environment. It can be difficult to select exactly the point you want, to snap exactly to the distance you intend, and so forth. For a couple of personal projects, I manage to kludge together some tools that would let me design objects in POV-Ray and then convert them to STL files, but it was always an unreliable and wonky process.

Solid Geometry
Silver, Burdett and Company, 1934
Preface In this text solid geometry is so presented that the student will gain (1) a knowledge of the properties of planes and lines in space; of polyhedrons, cones, cylinders, and spheres; (2) further practice in the processes of logic which were begun in plane geometry; (3) a realization that he must understand solid geometry if he wishes to comprehend nature and art and the fascinating and diversified developments of modern means of communication, transportation, construction, and fabrication; and (4) skills and attitudes that will be helpful as a part of the training essential in meeting his own personal problems of everyday living. As examples of these attitudes the following are cited: (1) geometry is a science of necessary conclusions; (2) it wrestles with difficult problems; (3) it tolerates no guessing or jumping at conclusions; and (4) it requires strict attention to the whole problem with discriminating use of the means at hand to obtain a solution. In this text the student's attention is directed repeatedly to the relations of solid geometry to other school subjects, such as algebra, trigonometry, geography, and physics. The functional relations of geometric quantities are emphasized, thus tying up solid geometry with modern scientific thinking. Relations of solid geometry to various phases of modern life outside the classroom are also dealt with in exercises. Attention should be directed especially to the problems which contain data of actual work of present-day steel fabrication, refractories, and public utilities.
