How to Make GRE and GMAT Math Flash Cards
By elkim eHow Member I want to do this! What's This? User-Submitted Article Doing well on the GRE and GMAT math section requires knowing many basic formulas and arithmetic properties. Many of these are concepts you learned elementary school and high school, but if you've forgotten them, you will need to brush up! Here is a guide to making flash cards that will get you answering GRE and GMAT exam questions more quickly. Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
Things You'll Need:
  • 3x5 note cards, unlined marker formulas and times table
Make flash cards for the times table up to 20, that is, the largest product should be 20 x 20 for this set. In addition, make some multiplication cards for the squares, starting at 21 and ending at 40. One key to doing well on these tests is having the times table down cold so that you don't spent lots of time working arithmetic by hand.

Advice for New Students
Mathematics is at the heart of many different sciences and at the gateway of many different disciplines. It is the language used to express laws of nature and many phenomena in various subjects, including medicine psychology, sociology, biology, economics, computer science, engineering, and more.
Several Mathematics courses fulfill the School of Arts and Sciences Formal Reasoning and Analysis Requirement. The basic Math Sequence is the Calculus Sequence and two semesters in Algebra and Analysis. In the Fall of 2008 we started a yearlong HONOR CALCULUS SEQUENCE aimed at students who are interested in Mathematics, but not necessarily Math Majors.
Our ADVANCED COURSES are designed mostly for math majors, however, these courses are also popular with Economics, Physics, and Statistics Majors, as well as students in SEAS and Wharton. The overall goal of these courses is to provide the students with a thorough mathematical education that will prepare them either for graduate school and a research career or for a variety of opportunities in business and industries where high level mathematics can be applied. For graduate students who wish to explore the world of mathematics, here are a few things that you probably would like to know at the beginning of the journey. (I wish someone would have told me so!)
    • What is research? What does research mean? The pursuit of truth? A quest into the unknown?
Well, to start, it means finding a problem and solving it. It could be a tiny step of a small puzzle, (by standing at the shoulder of a giant!). Or, it could also be a glimpse at a bigger picture (eventually). Since any worthwhile problem won't be easy to solve, the road can be long and windy with twists and turns. Nevertheless, here are some factors in your favor:
      • It is not a real time game. It is not an exam that you need to turn in within an hour. (Of course, there is an upper bound for the length of your graduate study. Here at UCSD, the bound is 5 years!)
      • You are allowed to make mistakes, plenty of them. We all do.
      • The percentage of success is not required to be high. In fact, if you can do one research problem out of some large number (10, 100, ...) of problems, it is good enough.
