  • Gamelan - The Official Java Directory - EarthWeb, Inc.
Gamelan's primary mission is to serve as a central registry and directory of Java resources. Much like Yahoo!, Gamelan collects links to resources stored on other sites across the Web. However, unlike Yahoo!, Gamelan's mission is specific - Gamelan collects and classifies pointers to resources related to Java. This specificity allows more depth: included for each entry are the URL and a brief description, and also information about its author, links to related resources, documentation, etc. The site features a Java terms glossary and reference library, and directories of applets on various topics including Java:Educational:Math, more>>
  • Java Components for Mathematics - Hobart and William Smith Colleges
Configurable mathematical software components written in the Java programming language and meant to be used on instructional Web pages as interactive illustrations, special-purpose calculators, support for exercises, etc. The components in Version 1 are mostly useful for calculus and pre-calculus and for science courses that use some of the same material. They use Java 1.1, and so will not work in some older browsers that support only Java 1.0. The site offers links to source code, documentation, programming information, and sample applets, including a set of configurable applets that can be extensively customized without programming, using only applet params. There are also links for downloading the applets and source code.

    Internet Applets for Elementary Math
Math applets are web-based, interactive, self-contained applications that promote inquiry-based learning. The math applets featured on the web sites below can assist students in understanding math concepts with greater fluency in a shorter amount of time. The learner is able to visualize and manipulate data, understand concept application, and build understanding. These applets can be used to differentiate instruction, with small groups, or in whole class instruction.
      National Library of Virtual Manipulatives
The National Library of Virtual Manipulatives (NLVM) is an NSF supported project that began in 1999 to develop a library of uniquely interactive, web-based virtual manipulatives or concept tutorials, mostly in the form of Java applets, for mathematics instruction (K-12 emphasis).

Pentomino game applet. Comment: Make Width = 29 * scale, Height = 28 * scale. That's how big the applet sets its frame.
Your browser either does not support Java or does not have Java enabled if you are seeing this instead of a gray playing area here.
    Pentominoes
A gray area should appear to the right here with buttons, a grid, and blue pentominoes. If you are only seeing a blank rectangular area to the right, then try clicking in that space. This has worked in some browser/Java combinations.
    Instructions
Try to place the pieces in the box with no overlapping. There are many ways to do it. Check here for more detailed instructions, source code, and the development stages of this applet, i.e. how this applet was built, step by step.
    Known problems
This applet, version j, runs under compilers supporting Java 1.1, unless there's a problem with the compiler. If you get an error on the Java console like "pentominoes class not found" then it's probably because you have an older JRE (Java Runtime Environment). Version g of this applet should work in that case. Check
