The mathematician Benjamin Peirce called mathematics "the science that draws necessary conclusions". Albert Einstein , on the other hand, stated that "as far as the laws of mathematics refer to reality, they are not certain; and as far as they are certain, they do not refer to reality." Through the use of abstraction and logical reasoning , mathematics evolved from counting calculation measurement , and the systematic study of the shapes and motions of physical objects. Practical mathematics has been a human activity for as far back as

The prizes are presented every four years at the European Congresses of Mathematics. The prize committee is appointed by the EMS. It consits of about fifteen internationally recognized mathematicians covering a large variety of fields. The first prize award was in Paris in 1992, the second in Budapest in 1996. The EMS prizes award will be presented at the 3ecm, carrying a monetary award of 6,000 Euro. Prize Committee Jacques-Louis Lions (Paris), Chair

    LMS Prizes
The Society awards several Prizes each year for achievements in and contributions to Mathematics. There are seven Prizes and one Medal awarded regularly by Council: the De Morgan Medal (triennial), the Polya Prize (two years out of three), the Senior Berwick Prize, the Senior Whitehead Prize, the Naylor Prize and Lectureship, the Berwick Prize and the Fröhlich (biennial) and the Whitehead Prizes (annual). In addition, the Society jointly with the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications awards the David Crighton Medal and the Christopher Zeeman Medal. The Society annually awards a Cecil King Travel Scholarship in Mathematics to a young mathematician of outstanding promise, to support a period of study or research abroad for a typical period of three months, to enhance his or her studies and further his or her career development. The Scholarship was established in 2001 by the Cecil King Memorial Fund.

Probability Probability is the branch of mathematics that studies the possible outcomes of given events together with the outcomes' relative likelihoods and distributions. In common usage, the word "probability" is used to mean the chance that a particular event (or set of events) will occur expressed on a linear scale from (impossibility) to 1 (certainty), also expressed as a percentage between and 100%. The analysis of events governed by probability is called statistics There are several competing interpretations of the actual "meaning" of probabilities. Frequentists view probability simply as a measure of the frequency of outcomes (the more conventional interpretation), while Bayesians treat probability more subjectively as a statistical procedure that endeavors to estimate parameters of an underlying distribution based on the observed distribution. A properly normalized function that assigns a probability "density" to each possible outcome within some interval is called a probability density function (or probability distribution function), and its cumulative value (integral for a continuous distribution or sum for a discrete distribution) is called a

International Mathematical Union Press Information 30 April 2002 GAUSS PRIZE New Prize in Science promotes Mathematics as a Key Technology Mathematics is an important and ancient discipline—no one doubts that. However, it seems that only the experts know that mathematics is a driving force behind many modern technologies. The Gauss Prize has been created to help the rest of the world realize this fundamental fact. The prize is to honor scientists whose mathematical research has had an impact outside mathematics – either in technology, in business, or simply in people’s everyday lives. The Gauss Prize is awarded jointly by the Deutsche Mathematiker-Vereinigung (DMV = German Mathematical Union) and the International Mathematical Union (IMU) , and administered by the DMV. The prize consists of a medal and a monetary award (currently valued at EUR 10,000). The source of the prize is the surplus from the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM’98) held in Berlin. The official announcement of the establishment of the prize takes place on 30 April 2002, the 225 th anniversary of the birth of Carl Friedrich Gauss, after whom the award is named.
