The problem of medication math errors, ways to minimize them, conversion factors , abbreviations, plus an introduction to dimensional analysis.
http://www.alysion.org/dimensional/analysis.htm

So what's the big idea anyway? Learn dimensional analysis by working through the answers. Copy and make your own cheat-sheet. Know'm and love'm. Be afraid, be very afraid. You could save a life. Or how I came to post so much stuff on this Web site. The one-page all-you-really-need-to-know guide. A unified approach, 4th ed. Some general examples here. Drug calculation quiz I took to get my first job. Palm files and programs you can use. When you're doing applied math numbers have units of measure, or "dimensions," attached to them. There are lots of formulas out there, but here's the big idea: when you plug values into a formula and pay close attention to what happens to the units as the formula is simplified, you'll see that all the units cancel out except those units that end up in your answer. This always happens if the formula is correct and you plug in the appropriate factors.
So what someone figured out is that you don't need formulas at all. For every problem you can just take the factors associated with it and arrange them so all the units you don't want cancel out. You're then left with only the units you do want (the ones in your answer). This process is fairly trivial, and with only slight attention to detail, you always get the right answer, bing-bang-boom, every time.

This lets you know what the teacher is like and what is expected of you. Read the class syllabus! (Or whatever the teacher passes out the first week) This will let you know all the rules regarding absences, exams, etc. Be on time for class! In fact, always try to be a little early, so you can get out all your stuff. Don't miss class unless you are sick (nobody wants your germs! 8-) ). Your teacher can explain something to you in a fraction of the time that it would take you to figure it out on your own (or even with the help of a tutor.) If you do have to miss a class, always call a classmate (before you return to class!) to find out what you missed and if your teacher assigned anything that will be due when you return. During class, always have your calculator on your desk and have your text book out. Teachers often do problems out of the book as examples. If the teacher is making some sort of computation, work along with him/her.

Algebra in eighth grade was once reserved for the mathematically gifted student. In 1990, very few eighth graders, about one out of six, were enrolled in an algebra course. As the decade unfolded, leaders began urging schools to increase that number. President Clinton lamented, “Around the world, middle students are learning algebra and geometry. Here at home, just a quarter of all students take algebra before high school.”

108. Female Teachers’ Math Anxiety Negatively Affects Female Students | Brain Blogg

By Divya Mathur, PhD Shaheen E Lakhan 3 Comments Share / Save / Email For a long time it was believed that males have better spatial and numerical abilities resulting in their greater aptitude for mathematics compared to females. But research in cognitive development of human infants and children has failed to support these claims. Instead, scientists now have enough evidence to conclude that the same set of biologically based cognitive capacities is responsible for mathematical and scientific reasoning in both the sexes. However, stereotypes that girls and women lack mathematical ability persist and are still widely held by the society. Gender differences in mathematical performance and ability remain a concern as scientists seek to address the under representation of women at the highest levels of mathematics, physical sciences and engineering fields. So why are these results important? More than 90% elementary school teachers in the US are females. Similarly, women constitute the majority of elementary school teachers around most the world. Many teachers entrusted with the task of teaching math to young minds suffer from math anxiety. Undoubtedly, apart from their current teachers’ anxieties, many other reasons, such as, parents, peers, and siblings who either do or do not model traditional academic gender roles may play an important part in shaping girls’ gender ability beliefs and their math achievement more generally. But considering that elementary school plays a major role in determining a child’s personality, the role of a teacher cannot be downplayed. Currently, even those with a propensity to avoid math can become an elementary school teacher.

Where Will I Ever Use Algebra? What is The Value of Algebra?
Sound familiar? In an arithmetic class, you can point out many applications like retail markup, gas mileage, medical doses, etc. but what about algebra? For example, where will the average person make use of methods used to solve algebraic equations? Why would the average person need to know how to find the inverse of a function? Hopefully, after viewing the examples on this site, your students will clearly see that the process of learning higher mathematics provides valuable skills in deductive reasoning and symbolic reasoning in addition to math skills used directly in science and engineering applications.
There are lessons posted on this site incorporate real-world applications of math and real-world experiments on video with exercises, deductive reasoning, use of technology, and collaborative group activities, while adhering to a traditional sequence of topics. The lessons will work with most standard pre-calculus text books so there is no need to switch from your current text. Download and/or modify these lessons, videos, and worksheets for use in your own class. There are college algebra lecture notes that you may download - they are in pdf form and also in an editable MS Word form.
