by Prof. Jim Lengel, Boston University College of Communication ( and
Some of my best friends are math teachers. And in the beginning, computers in schools were the province of the math department. They were, after all, devices for computing, which is what math teachers do. Math teachers were always in the lead with computing in our schools. I was a social studies teacher in the early days of computers, and never did much with math. But recent encounters with math teachers and computers have led to this week's article. In helping a school of engineering to put their teaching program online, I have enjoyed to opportunity to work with teachers who use mathematics every day in their work, a high level of math of a type I never expected my sixth-graders to learn, and that seldom confronts a professor of communication. Integrals, sums, sinusoidal functions and fast Fourier transforms find their way into the everyday speech of these teachers. Through my work with them, I have found that while the rest of us in the humanities have all become computer users over the last two decades, the math teachers have maintained their lead. They use computers in ways that go far beyond what the rest of us do.

    Math Teachers
By Debbie Yost on March 8th, 2010 Image Courtesy of Stock.xchng Although I struggled with math, I had taken all the advanced classes available in high school and had relatively good grades.  This was not achieved without a lot of tears and hours of frustration and homework.  I often went into class early to discuss assignments with my math teacher.  When I told my mom I was going to be a math teacher, she did not try to dissuade me from pursuing it, even though she knew the difficulties I had through my high school years. The Mirror has Two Faces I could not see how anyone was learning anything in that class.  I expected everyone to be struggling as much as I was because our professor was not teaching us anything.  However, I was wrong.  Many of my friends had little or no difficulty in class.  I spent hours studying and in the end, received a D in a 5 hour class my first semester of college.  I immediately dropped all pretense of wanting to be a math teacher and started looking for the right career for me.  Share: In your journey to adulthood, did you have any career changes along the way that made you realize you needed to be true to yourself?  Did you have any teachers that helped you with that realization?
