  • school girl image by Nenad Djedovic from Fotolia.com Children learn basic math terms during elementary school. During elementary school , foundations are laid for future learning. Kids need not only learn how to solve mathematical problems, they need to understand common terms that will be used repeatedly throughout their school years and beyond. Basic terms are typically introduced in the early elementary school years, and vocabulary develops and expands as children get older and are introduced to new mathematical concepts.
  • Foundations
  • During first and second grade, children are exposed to the most basic math terms, words which they will use throughout their time in school. According to Harcourt School Publishers, some of the terms children should learn during their first two years of school are add, addition sentence, after, bar graph, before, centimeter, circle, cone, corner, cube, cylinder, day, difference, dime, calendar, perimeter, pint, equals, even numbers, odd numbers, oval, meter, multiply, estimate, fact

    Math Terms
Common math terms in elementary education
Math terms are essential for understanding mathematicals. They can be found in abundance online and in mathematics dictionaries. There are several basic math terms that are important for children to understand. These and other common terms will prove very useful in the study of mathematics. Here is a sample of these important math terms:
Average - a way to describe a sample of data with one number. In order to find an average, you must divide the sum of a group of numbers by the amount of numbers in the group being used. You can apply this term with children in a practical exercise. Tell them to imagine that they are having a party for which they will be baking cupcakes. Tell them to imagine that they have four friends, each of whom eat a different amount of cupcakes- 4, 5, 3 and 2 cupcakes respectively. Now find the average: 4 + 5 + 3 + 2 = 14. 14 divided by 4 is 3.5. So, each party guest eats an average of 3.5 cupcakes.
Constant - a symbol that only has one given value at any time. The number 3 is a constant, as it can only be 3 at any time. Symbols can also be constants that play important roles in both scientific and mathematical formulas. For instance, the three sides of a triangle- known as, a, b, and c, with a and b being the sides and c being the hypotenuse, are constants. They will always play the same role when calculating the area of a triangle. This does not necessarily mean that a, b, and c will always have the same numerical value but instead that they will always play the same role in a mathematical equation.

Why is the letter m used for slope in equations?
This question has been researched by math historians but has not yet been answered definitively. Many people have been taught that m comes from the French monter, to climb, but this appears to be an 'urban legend.' Although m can stand for "modulus of slope" and the term "modulus" has often been used for "the essential parameter determining," there is no definitive proof that this is the derivation of m. M. Risi, the author of math textbooks written in French for students of Quebec province, says that in his system, "the first letters of the alphabet, a, b, c... represent the constants, the last letters, x, y, z, represent the unknown variables, and the middle letters, m, n, p... represent the parameters." When he started to explain slope, it was in studying the first degree equation: y = mx + b. X and y were the variables, b was fixed and considered as a constant, and was appended to the coefficient of x as its value variedso it was a parameter, and that is why m was selected. Prof. John Conway points out, however, that M. Risi was not the first person to use 'm' to represent slope. Thus the jury is still out on this question.

    addend
A number that is added in an addition problem.
    addition
The process of combining two or more numbers to find their sum. Addition is used to find the result of putting together items in a group, or parts in a whole. Addition is indicated by the plus sign (+). Addition is the opposite of subtraction.
    arithmetic
A branch of mathematics that involves combining numbers by addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
    borrowing
In subtraction, to take one (unit of ten) from a digit in the minuend to add as ten to the digit with the next lower place value in the minuend. Done when the number in the minuend is smaller than the number in the corresponding place in the subtrahend.
    carrying
To move numbers from a given place value, or column, to the next greater place value. When the results of addition or multiplication are a number greater than 9, the number is regrouped this way. The ones are put in place, and the other values are carried to the next column.
    commutative property
In addition, the order of addends does not change the sum (2+4 = 4+2). In multiplication, the order of factors being multiplied does not change the product (2X4 = 4X2). (See order property)

    Math Terms = Math Vocabulary.
Math is a simple beautiful language. Pity we don't teach it that way. Math terms are often a source of trepidation and fear. Soon this page will have links to a glossary of math terms: math vocabulary and definitions. But here at Crewton Ramone's House of Math Math you will actually understand them because they will come with pictures and visually obvious explanations. Vocabulary will be roughly divided into groups for the grade level teaching some of you may be more familiar with, since publik skoolz insist on segmenting everything. Segmentation is fine, there's nothing wrong with bite size pieces unless the bites are so small and disjointed that they student lose the meaning and the math becomes meaningless, and therefore useless. The Mathematics has it's own vocabulary. Much like any subject, it has a "lingo". You need to know "the lingo". On a boat for example the toilet is called "the head", toward the back of the boat is "aft" once you get there you are at the "stern", the front "fore" and the ones everyone always confuses are port and starboard for left and right, the light on the port side is red the light on the starboard side is green. It's just vocabulary. Why do math term cause fear? Why aren't people afraid of boat vocabulary? We start by naming symbols often times. This is a 1, one...this is a two. But we can also count things and call two flowers two or 3 dogs three...
