Speaking in Math Terms
Wednesday, June 25th, 2008 1:47 pm Written by: Jessica Fries-Gaither “Words! Words! Words!” sang Eliza Doolittle in the musical My Fair Lady . “I’m so sick of words!” But students have to master the vocabulary of mathematics. This is especially difficult for those learning a new language even as they struggle with new mathematics vocabulary. The first two resources deal with mathematical terms themselves, while the other three offer classroom activities in Spanish and English. A Maths Dictionary for Kids
This animated, interactive mathematics dictionary for kids explains over 500 common mathematical terms in simple language. Each term is illustrated and, often, accompanied by an interactive applet that makes visual and immediate the definition of the term. Terms and Formulas from Beginning Algebra to Calculus
This interactive mathematics dictionary offers many terms and formulas appropriate for older middle school students. The illustrations, diagrams, and applets help define the terms every bit as much as the text does. Biblioteca Nacional de Manipuladores Virtuales
This is the Spanish equivalent of the National Library of Virtual Manipulatives . Together they offer interactive, web-based virtual manipulatives, mostly in the form of Java applets, for mathematics instruction. On any page, users can easily switch between English and Spanish by using a drop-down menu.

Usually, once you get the math equation, you're fine; the actual math involved is often fairly simple. But figuring out the actual equation can seem nearly impossible. What follows is a list of hints and helps. Be advised, however: To really learn "how to do" word problems, you will need to practice, practice, practice. The first step to effectively translating and solving word problems is to read the problem entirely. Don't start trying to solve anything when you've only read half a sentence. Try first to get a feel for the whole problem; try first to see what information you have, and what you still need. The second step is to work in an organized manner. Figure out what you need but don't have, and name things. Pick variables to stand for the unknows, clearly labelling these variables with what they stand for. Draw and label pictures neatly. Explain your reasoning as you go along. And make sure you know just exactly what the problem is actually asking for. You need to do this for two reasons:

How to Reduce Fractions to Lowest Terms
To reduce a fraction to lowest terms, find the largest number that will divide evenly into both the numerator and the denominator. (Reducing the fraction will not change its value; the reduced fraction will be an equivalent.) Example:
Reduce 6/18 to lowest terms. The largest number that will divide evenly into both the numerator and the denominator is 6.
Thus, the fraction 6/18 is the same as the fraction 1/3 when reduced to lowest terms. go to SuperKids Math Worksheet Creator for Reducing Fractions

    Term (mathematics)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search The word term is from the Latin terminus which literally means "boundary line, limit", from the Proto-Indo-European root *ter- "peg, post, boundary". In elementary mathematics , a term is either a single number or variable, or the product of several numbers and/or variables separated from another term by a + or - sign in an overall expression. For example, in
    x yzw
x , and 5 yzw are all terms. In the context of polynomials , sometimes term is used for a monomial with a coefficient : to 'collect like terms' in a polynomial is the basic operation of making it a linear combination of distinct monomials. A series is often represented as the sum of a sequence of terms. In general mathematical use of words, however, the word "term" is not limited to additive terms . Individual factors in an expression representing a product would be multiplicative terms . Indeed, individual elements of any mathematical expression may be referred to as terms. Terms Used in Equations
Here are the terms used in equations for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. These terms include augend, addend, sum, subrahend, minuend, difference, multiplicand, multiplier, product, factors, dividend, divisor, quotient, and remainder.
        Addition
In addition, an augend and an addend are added to find a sum. In the following equation, 6 is the augend, 3 is the addend, and 9 is the sum: NOTE: Sometimes both the augend and addend are called addends. Sometimes the sum is called the total.
        Subtraction
In subtraction, a subtrahend is subtracted from a minuend to find a difference. In the following equation, 9 is the minuend, 3 is the subtrahend, and 6 is the difference.
        Multiplication
In multiplication, a multiplicand and a multiplier are multiplied to find a product.
