Combining Like Terms Example 1 In this example, there are four terms: 3x , and 4ay Notice that the negative stays with the term. Now, in Algebra, we can simplify polynomials by combining like terms. Like terms are terms that have exactly the same variables, and those variables have exactly the same exponential values. In our example, 3x are like terms. Both have an x as the variable. Once you identify the like terms, you can combine them by adding or subtracting the constants. Here is what would happen in our example: , since 3-7 = -4 When combining like terms, the exponents and variable stay the same. We just work with the constants.

US$14.00 This is a glossary of basic mathetmatics words and symbols from the level of kindergarten through approximately grade 8. In many cases more than one definition is given. These are listed in order of difficulty, as younger students may need only the earlier definitions. The 104-page book is laid out alphabetically like any glossary or dictionary as well as a section for "numerals" and "symbols". There is a separate list of "Important Words and Symbols to Learn" for each grade, Kindergarten through eighth, an important feature for clearing up past confusions in earlier math studies.
