Recreational Math
This page is dedicated to mathematical amusements of all sorts, and to problems I find that are intriguing because they seem counter-intuitive or have an unexpected solution. For example: Old Boniface he took his cheer,
Then he drilled a hole through a solid sphere -
Clear through the center, straight and strong.
And the hole was just six inches long.
Now, tell us when the end was gained
What volume of the sphere remained?
It sounds like we haven't told enough,
But that's all you need - and it isn't tough! From "The Surprise Attack in Mathematical Problems", L.A. Graham See my solution
The Math Puzzler
The puzzler works like this: There is a math question posted below for you to puzzle over. When you have an answer, send it to me in an email. If your answer is right, I'll send you back a code to let you access the next puzzler in the series. I'll keep extending the series of puzzles as I find or invent new ones, but I'll maintain a list of people who have solved any puzzles, and post a "hall of fame" for those who have solved the most.

Jill Britton's HOME
Teacher, consultant, author, conference speaker, Jill Britton is deeply interested in the teaching of mathematics. Jill's experiences include teaching Middle School students in summer camps, conducting workshops for elementary students and/or teachers nationwide, and instructing college level students full-time. She is currently a mathematics instructor at Camosun College in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Jill's Camosun Website Jill regards mathematics
as the study of patterns and uses symmetry and tessellations, the art of M. C. Escher, polyhedra (unit origami and tetrahedral kites), curves (line designs, conics, cycloids/spirograph, curves of constant width, and fractals), and recreational topology to promote an interest in mathematics. Jill's strong background in teaching forms the basis for the books she has authored. These books are intended to be resource material to supplement the curriculum with recreationally-focused topics. In 2009, Jill was the recipient of the ACCC national award for teaching excellence.

Math 1500 (online)

Introduction
Math can be a lot easier and fun when we understand the basics such the place values. I am currently reading the book “Math Magic: How to Master Everyday Math Problems” by Scott Flansburg. After I read the Chapter 1 and 2 of this book (first 25 pages), I find it is very interesting to do addition from left to right although most of us learnt and used to do addition from right to left. This is one of many nontraditional ways to solve some everyday math problems. The main advantage of using this method, according to the author, is faster calculation or quick estimation compared with the conventional algorithm of right to left addition. The algorithm is easy to learn.
Place Values
We write numbers in digits. Each digit has its values, or place values. If it is one digit number, its value is between and 9, or ones. If it is two digits number, it means ten or more, or tens. You can count as how many tens as what the left digit says. For example, the number 72 has two digits. The left digit, 7, stands for 70. If it is a three digits number, the left digit means one hundred or more, or hundreds. Like in number 125, the left digit, 1, means 100, so the number 125 has one hundred, two tens, and five ones. In four digits numbers, the left digit stands for how many thousands, or thousands. For the number 2,378, it has two thousands, three hundreds, seven tens, and eight ones… And so on.

February 26, 2010 this video by Phil Gordon
Set Up
The flop hits the table containing no Aces, but it does contain two hearts: 10♥, 6♦, 2♥. You know there is a decent chance that your opponent holds two hearts in his hand, because he likes to play suited cards.
What Are The Odds Against Your Opponent Completing Their Flush?
How Much Should You Bet?
If the opponent is being offered less than 4.2 to 1 on his wager, he is making a mistake to call. The goal is to make a bet ( x ) large enough so the ratio of the pot (400 + x ) to the amount he would have to add ( x ) is less than 4.2. Here comes the algebra. We will determine the value of x for which (400 + x x = 4.2, this will give us the mathematically fair wager. x x x x      (Note that x cannot equal in this problem.) x x A bet of $125 creates a pot of $525, offering your opponent 525:125 (or 4.2:1) odds for calling. Any wager greater than $125, will offer your opponents insufficient odds to call. For example, a bet of $200 increases the pot to $600 and offers your opponent only 3:1 odds. The trick is to size your bet as large as you can while still getting your opponent to call.
