Bible skeptics allege that the writer of 1 Kings couldn't possibly have been inspired because he evidently believed that the value of pi was 3, not the more nearly correct value of 3.14. As evidence, the skeptics point to 1 Kings 7:23 in which the writer says that circumference of Solomon's man-made circular pond was 30 cubits and its diameter was 10 cubits: "He [Solomon] made the Sea of cast metal, circular in shape, measuring ten cubits from rim to rim and five cubits high. It took a line of thirty cubits to measure around it." However, if the circumference of the pond really was 30 cubits, the diameter would have to be 9.549 cubits, approximately. Rounded to the nearest integer, the diameter is 10 cubits, which is close enough, even for a god who could have given the value of pi to at least 5.1 billion digits [2]assuming this god was only interested in conveying information about Solomon's bath.

Irrational Numbers Pi is a mathematical constant which represents the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter and it is used in many mathematical calculations in science, mathematics, and engineering. It is approximately equal to 3.14159. Pi is an irrational number (It cannot be expressed as a fraction) and consequently its decimal representation never ends or repeats and it is a transcendental number (It has no known math operation or sequence that can produce it). A great deal of effort has been made to determine it more accurately. It can also represented by a Greek letter.
    Students can easily remember the value of pi to 6 decimal places if they simply remember the sentence: "I wish I could translate pi." They do have to remember that it starts with the number "3" NOTE: The graphic uses the sentence "I wish I could remember pi" which is an estimate to six decimal places."

  • Pi Videos Pi is an extremely interesting number that is important to all sorts of mathematical calculations. Anytime you find yourself working with circles, arcs, pendulums (which swing through an arc), etc. you find pi popping up. We have run into pi when looking at gears spherical helium balloons and pendulum clocks . But you also find it in many unexpected places for reasons that seem to have nothing at all to do with circles. On one level pi is simple: It is the ratio of a circle's circumference divided by its diameter. This ratio, for any circle, is always the same - 3.14 or so. You can prove this to yourself with a circle, a piece of tape and a ruler. Look around your house and find something circular: a jar lid, a CD, a plate - whatever you can find that is circular, the bigger the better. Measure its diameter (the width across the center of circle) with the ruler. Now wrap a piece of tape around around the circle and cut or mark the tape so that it is exactly as long as the outer edge (the circumference) of the circle you are measuring. Measure the piece of tape. With a calculator divide the length of the tape by the diameter you measured for the circle. The answer you will get, if you have measured accurately, is always 3.14.

This discovery hinged on the idea of proportion - in this case humans noticed that if you double the distance "across" a circle, then you double the distance "around" it. In today's algebraic notation this implied the formula where Pi was constant. (It wasn't until 1706 that this notation, using the Greek letter seen in the above equation - often written Pi and pronounced like the English 'pie' - was introduced by William Jones). The significance of this discovery is clear: Circles are everywhere - in the sun, the moon, the pupils of our eyes, the most basic religious rituals and the earliest man-made structures. Achieving a greater mathematical understanding of Pi would lead to scientific and technological advances that would further the development of civilization, as well as creating some very interesting problems in pure mathematics.
