A Refined Value of Pi The irrational number pi can be computed to an infinite number of decimal places. It expresses the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter, a relationship which cannot be framed in terms of whole numbers. (Pi is needed to compute the area of a circle or volume of a sphere.) The value of pi was computed by Archimedes to three decimal places, and by Ptolemy to four decimal places. But after that, for 1450 years, no greater accuracy was achieved in the Western world. The Chinese, however, made great strides forward in computing pi. One way in which the ancient mathematicians tried to approach an accurate value for pi was to inscribe polygons with more and more sides to them inside circles, so that the areas of the polygons(which could be computed) would more and more closely approach the area of the circle. Thus, they could try to find a value for pi, since the circle's area was found by using the formula containing it. (They could measure the diameter, and squeeze a polygon whose area they knew into the circle; the only unknown number would be pi, which could then be calculated.) Archimedes used a 96-sided polygon, and decided that pi had a value between 3.142 and 3.140. The Chinese tried to sneak up on pi in the same fashion, but they were better at it. Liu Hui in the third century

How can my name be in pi?
I converted pi to base 27 (if you don't know what that means, read the section What does base 27 mean below). I took the digits to represent letters, according to 1=A, 2=B, and so on. The digit is punctuation. In this way, the expansion of pi looks like a long string of letters (with occasional punctuation), namely pi = C.CVEZ... = C + C
V
E
Z
where A=1, B=2, C=3,..., Z=26.
How many digits of pi do you have?
I started with over 1,000,000 digits in base 27. This represents the same accuracy as 1,500,000 decimal digits. If that sounds like a lot, it still only gave an 82% chance of finding a given 4 letter name! If your name has 5 letters, the chances were only about 7.2%! Now I have over 30 million digits in base 27, so a five letter name has an almost 90% chance of being found! Perhaps I'll push it up even further soon.

The Debate over the value of Pi
(Note: This piece is obviously fictional, but it is perhaps loosely based on a real attempt by the Indiana State Legislature to set the value of Pi by law in 1897. The text of the bill can be found here HUNTSVILLE, Ala. NASA engineers and mathematicians in this high-tech city are stunned and infuriated after the Alabama state legistature narrowly passed a law yesterday redefining pi, a mathematical constant used in the aerospace industry. The bill to change the value of pi to exactly three was introduced without fanfare by Leonard Lee Lawson (R, Crossville), and rapidly gained support after a letter-writing campaign by members of the Solomon Society, a traditional values group. Governor Guy Hunt says he will sign it into law on Wednesday. The law took the state's engineering community by surprise. "It would have been nice if they had consulted with someone who actually uses pi," said Marshall Bergman, a manager at the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization. According to Bergman, pi is a Greek letter that signifies the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. It is often used by engineers to calculate missile trajectories. Prof. Kim Johanson, a mathematician from University of Alabama, said that pi is a universal constant, and cannot arbitrarily be changed by lawmakers. Johanson explained that pi is an irrational number, which means that it has an infinite number of digits after the decimal point and can never be known exactly. Nevertheless, she said, pi is precisly defined by mathematics to be "3.14159, plus as many more digits as you have time to calculate".

108. Buffon's Problem ... Calculating The Value Of PI Using Toothpicks
Calculating the value of PI using toothpicks, to illustrate Count Buffon's problem. A problem for Math 31 or Junior High students
http://www.worsleyschool.net/science/files/buffon/buffon.html
Also known as 'Count Buffon's Problem') I magine dropping a handful of toothpicks onto a sheet of paper that has been ruled with a number of parallel, equidistant lines. What is the probability that any toothpick will land in such a way that it intersects a line?
At first glance, this problem seems difficult to solve. We will attempt to work out that probability, and show how you can find the value of PI by recording how many toothpicks actually intersect a line! Junior High classes might want to visit our 'Calculating Pi' page, where we outline how you can work out the value of Pi yourself using toothpicks, and send us your data. See results we've obtained from contributions by classrooms all around the world. Or try out our Buffon Applet , which will let you run the experiment online and get some immediate results!
Below is an explanation of where the formula comes from, designed for Math 31 students and teachers.

Clearly, the toothpicks can land on the paper in many ways.
However, the position of any toothpick can be characterized by:
  • the distance of the center of the toothpick from a line
  • the angle formed with the direction of the lines
Clearly, the toothpick

A transcendental number, approximately 3.14159, represented by the symbol , that expresses the ratio of the circumference to the diameter of a circle and appears as a constant in many mathematical expressions. The 16th letter of the Greek alphabet. : BEYOND INFINITY Deep in the nature of man is the will to go further than any human has ever been before. This quest is symbolized by the Greek letter , which evokes infinity. Humans are still in pursuit of the end of its innumerable string of decimals... No number (3.14...) has captured the attention and imagination of number fanatics and nerds throughout the ages as much as the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter - a.k.a. Pi. With incisive historical insight and a refreshing sense of humor, this page brings us the story of Pi and humankind's fascination with it, from Archimedes to da Vinci to the modern day Chudnovsky brothers, who holed up in their Manhattan apartment with a homemade supercomputer churning out digits of pi into the billions.

Print-friendly page The "Jewish" or "Bible" Value of "pi" Do the Nevi'im and the Ketuvim (sections of Jewish scripture, comprising parts of the Christian "Old Testament") really say that the value of pi is three? Not actually but, due to the social pressures to look down on all things Judeo-Christian and the perverse joy certain people get out of tormenting others, I keep receiving queries on this issue. Before we do the calculations to put this old chestnut to rest, let's lay a little groundwork. The Quote

Pi page
Just to say it's wonderful to find the Pi Page still going - as a young(ish) graduate in the early 1990s, the site probably did more than anything else to convince me that Mosaic (ask your grandparents) was useful for something other than downloading porn and spreading maliciously doctored photos worldwide. If there's ever an Internet Lifetime Achievement Award, I'll happily nominate Eve... And another thing - how come nowhere on this page can I find my favourite property of pi, our old friend e^(i*pi)-1? And another thing (part 2) - I just want to point out that I got 13/25 on the Pi Test - and am a qualified mathematician (who admittedly graduated 13 years ago but even so!) And (one last) thing - if the page needs a pompous slogan it should really be "One measures a circle beginning anywhere" (motto of the Fortean Society and all its spin-offs) - it may be meaningless but it sounds very impressive. Which in itself kinda sums up most mathematics.

Personal Update, April 1998
Hidden Codes in the Bible:
The Value of Pi
by Chuck Missler Koinonia House Ministries When I was a teenager, I was confronted by a skeptic (a Unitarian, actually) concerning an apparent discrepancy in 1 Kings 7:23. This passage deals with Solomon's Temple and the products of Hiram the Bronzeworker: And he made a molten sea, ten cubits from the one brim to the other: it was round all about, and his height was five cubits: and a line of thirty cubits did compass it round about. (1 Kings 7:23) The huge cast bronze basin in 1 Kings 7:23 was 10 cubits (note 1) in diameter and its circumference was 30 cubits, which is mathematically inaccurate. Almost any schoolboy knows that the circumference of a circle is not the diameter times 3, but rather, the diameter times a well-known constant called ("Pi"). The real value of 7r is 3.14159265358979, but is commonly approximated by 22/7. This is assumed, by many, to be an "error" in the Old Testament record, and is often presented as a skeptical rebuttal to the "inerrancy" of the Scripture. How can we say that the Bible is inerrant when it contains such an obvious geometrically incorrect statement? How do we deal with this?
