Home Welcome To IMS Africa's Mathematics Community faces a problem of educational and research infrastructure not strengthened enough to produce an adequate number of mathematicians with advanced degrees.
This has resulted in African born mathematicians acquiring their masters and doctorate degrees from outside the country. These foreign trained African Mathematicians after acquiring their qualifications usually do not come back to their native countries. It is against this background that IMS was setup to cater for the needs of young and enterprising African Scientists to help them develop their full potentials. Do you have any suggestions or Internet URLs where I can find some info? Thanks. Mrs. J. Dean Date: 11/07/96 at 22:08:59 From: Doctor Sarah Subject: Re: African American mathematicians Hello! Usually the first place we look for biographical information about individual mathematicians is the MacTutor History of Mathematics Archive: http://turnbull.mcs.st-and.ac.uk/history/ Also, see Prof. Scott Williams' series of pages, "Mathematicians of the African Diaspora," created to exhibit the accomplishments of the peoples of Africa and the African Diaspora within the Mathematical Sciences. http://www.math.buffalo.edu/mad/ Next, see "The Faces of Science: African Americans in the Sciences": http://www.princeton.edu/~mcbrown/display/faces.html I hope this will give you a good start on your project. -Doctor Sarah, The Math Forum Check out our web site! http://mathforum.org/dr.math/

Some perspective on WMY 2000
by A.O. Kuku
President of AMU (African Mathematical Union)
In many developing countries, African countries in particular, the mathematical research scientists are gradually becoming endangered species for obvious reasons, and unless something is done to arrest the situation, the year 2000 and beyond will witness little or no mathematical research activities in these areas of the world. The WMY 2000 can be instrumental in drawing the attention of the International Community to the various problems and co-operate with the local community towards their alleviation.
Some African Mathematical Union aspirations in the spirit of WMY 2000
1. AMU Mathematical Sciences network for Africa The aims and objectives of the network - which has currently fifteen members - are the following :
  • - To encourage North-South and South-South co-operation in the area of research and training of graduate students for higher degrees of African Universities, and thus alleviate the problem of brain-drain often resulting from long stay of students outside the continent.
  • - To bridge the isolation gap among African mathematicians through development of research groups in member Institutions of the network eventually leading to the production of critical mass of mathematical scientists so badly needed in the continent for developmental purpose.

The Senegalese government has committed around US$1.3 million and donated a plot of land near Mbour on the country's coast for the centre, SciDev.Net was told last week. Two other centres will be set up in Ghana and Ethiopia, according to an announcement by the Canadian government this month (6 July). Canada will provide US$19 million in funding for all three centres, to be channelled through the Ontario-based Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics.

    Were African Women First Mathematicians?
This seems at first an odd assertion, that, according to John Kellermeier's investigation , "How Menstruation Created Mathematics", women and their periods inspired and jump-started the development of mathematics by humans.
It began with "ethnomathematics", as defined by M. Borba (For the Learning of Mathematics, 10(1), 39-43) and D'Ambrosio (Impact of Science on Society, 40(4) 369-78) (both in 1990), who "define mathematics as the quantitative techniques that humans develop in response to the problems, struggles, and endeavors of human survival."
Apparently, the first driving survival issue was reproduction, hence the focus on women. Evidence of lunar calendars (timing of the menses) and objects indicating worship of fertility goddesses, etc. are found in ancient artifacts such as the Ishango Bone , also known as the second oldest mathematical object , possibly containing the oldest table of prime numbers.
You can read here to decide if the menstruation-inspiration idea is really on track.
