Female African-American Mathematicians Bibliography
Query From Kriste Lindenmeyer 22 Jan 1998 Dear H-Women subscribers: I have a student who has identified some of the first female African American mathematicians. But she has found few sources. She has used some of the most obvious encyclopedias (for example the 100 Black Women in American History).I thought that H-Women subscribers might be able to help her find more detail about these women. Keyona has included a brief biography of each woman at least what she has found so far) in the paragraphs below. Any further advice about researching this topic would be very much appreciated. From TTU::KNS7090 "Key Stewart" Tenn. Tech. U.20-JAN-1998 I would like to work on the level of how these women made/or did not make a difference for African American women, and the impact they had on the math profession. ***Evelyn Boyd Granville**- born on May 1,1924 in Washington, D.C.; She was encouraged by Ulysses Basset and Mary Cromwell, who were at sometime her math teachers. She graduated summa cum laude from Smith College in 1945 and elected to Phi Beta Kappa; Obtained her Ph.D from Yale Univ.; Spent a year at New York Institute as a research assistant then a part time instructor at NY; Later appointed to a associate professor at Fisk Univ.; Two former students-Vivienne Malone Meyers and Etta Zuber Falconer received their Ph.D's as well.; Dr. Granville worked at IBM involving herself in several of their projects, later becomes a research specialist (1956-1960). In 1963, she returned to IBM as a mathematician, four years went by and she took a teaching job at California State Univ, got married, retired at Cal State and then moved to Texas taking a job at Texas College (Tyler,Texas). In 1989, Dr. Granville earned an honorary doctorate from Smith College.

The scoring rubric for this will be based on the following criteria:
-100 Points based on the score that your peers feel you earned for your presentation. This will be based on the following criteria that you must deliver during your presentation: Name, Date of Birth, Birth Place, Teaching Positions, Research Projects Completed, Contributions to the Mathematics World, Delivery, Syntax, Overall did you make sense speaking to your classmates.
-100 Points based on the score I feel you earned based on your presentation. I will be judging based on the same criteria that your classmates will be using: Name, Date of Birth, Birth Place, Teaching Positions, Research Projects Completed, Contributions to the Mathematics World, Delivery, Syntax, Overall did you make sense speaking to your classmates.
-100 Points for your brochure that you must produce on the person. This should contain all of the above information: Name, Date of Birth, Birth Place, Teaching Positions, Research Projects Completed, Contributions to the Mathematics World, and Resources list. Also I will be looking for a picture of the person that you researched. As well the grade will be based on is the brochure presentable, is it easy to read and understand. Is this something you would be proud to show your parents and others.

Famous Black Mathematicians
Times have witnessed many well-known mathematicians who have come up with interesting new discoveries in the field of mathematics. To know about some of the famous Black mathematicians, read on… Mathematics has continued to interest many, since centuries. Several mathematicians and theorists who, through their theorems and corollaries have found solutions to many complex mathematical problems and have shaped the modern-day mathematics. Here is a look at some of the very famous Black mathematicians.
Benjamin Banneker: Born on November 9, 1731, Benjamin Banneker was a Black mathematician, astronomer, clockmaker and publisher. During his childhood years, he was trained in reading and doing basic arithmetic, by his grandmother and a Quaker schoolmaster. When he was capable of helping his parents in working at their farm, he stopped taking formal education. When Banneker was 21 years of age, he saw Andrew Ellicott's pocket watch. Seeing his keen interest in the watch, Ellicott presented it to Banneker. Banneker started examining the watch and it’s working. He designed huge replicas of the watch by calculating the gear assemblies and made a huge striking clock. This invention of Benjamin Banneker served as an accurate timepiece and he earned recognition as a clockmaker. Banneker contributed to the field of astronomy, by devising calculations to predict solar and lunar eclipses.
He is famous for his puzzles in mathematics and trigonometry. His puzzle, 'Trigonometry' demonstrates his expertise in logarithms. People still wonder which logarithmic table he might have used. He was instrumental in devising a method of finding the lengths of the sides of an equilateral triangle inscribed in a circle, whose diameter is known. His pioneering discoveries that were to bring a positive change to mathematics make evident the genius in him. He died in 1806 but is remembered as one of the famous Black mathematicians.

Biography
Robert Eugene Megginson grew up in a family that enjoyed and valued mathematics, which is certainly one of the reasons for his interest in the field. His maternal Native American grandfather never attended a day of formal school in his life, but was very well self-educated and was fascinated by mathematics. He loved to give Megginson small mathematical problems to work out (e.g., "If you have $2.00 and want to buy 17 stamps of the following denominations, ... "), and his interest in these sorts of problems certainly rubbed off. Megginson's father, whose family is from England, has a bachelor's degree in physics and mathematics, and that also influenced his decision to go into mathematics. However, Megginson did not do so immediately after getting his first college degree. After receiving his bachelor's degree in physics in 1969, he worked for eight years as a computer systems software specialist for Roper Corporation in Kankakee, Illinois, a Fortune 500 corporation that at the time primarily manufactured home appliances and lawn tractors. Before leaving to pursue his doctorate in mathematics, he had risen to the position of Lead Systems Software Specialist for the company, which put him in charge of all operating system software selection, development, and maintenance. Though this was an exciting and interesting position, he had come to know that his real love is mathematics, which was the reason for his decision in 1977 to return to college.

http://www.math.buffalo.edu/mad/PEEPS/madprofiles.html
Profiles of Mathematicians of the African Diaspora in the Twentieth Century At the beginning of this project, a reasonable estimate for the numbers of mathematicians* with"black" african heritage appeared to be 0.1% of the total number of mathematicians in the world. Below is a list, linked to profiles, of all 250 of projected 300 mathematicians we have located. Notice that if we restrict our attention to the United States, then the figure grows to ~1% (actually, 1.5% for new Ph.D.'s from 1995 thru 1997 ). It is clear that without Affirmative Action in the United States this list would be approximately one-third its size. We should not ignore the contributions of those individuals whose careers in education are supported by a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education, a D.Ed. in Mathematics, or a Ph.D. in a non-mathematical subject, but whose career has been devoted/connected to mathematical education. For these the MAA SUMMA Archive of Minority Mathematicians, Dr. William Hawkins, is, though limited to the U.S., oriented to include Mathematics Education and all "Under-represented" minorities. 12/21/98 If you have additions or corrections please write Dr. Scott Williams at Mathematics Department, SUNY at Buffalo, Buffalo NY 14214 U.S.A. or

But that's not the way it should be, according to the organizers behind a new program that will send graduate students from Brown University and a campus of the University of Paris (VI) back and forth across the Atlantic to learn how approaches to mathematics problems can vary depending on the research environment and even the national culture. Unlike other graduate courses, the partnership between the two highly ranked applied math programs (and their pure math counterparts) encourages students to navigate between two distinct academic cultures instead of treating the community of scholars as a totally cohesive, global whole that shares similar methodologies and approaches. "We wanted to teach the students that although we might be doing similar things, we might be addressing the problems in very different ways. It’s very beneficial to know the different cultures, even within the same topic," said Jan Hesthaven, a professor of applied math at Brown who maintains ties with the campus in Paris at the Université Pierre et Marie Curie, and travels there often.
