My friend Ken Hollings , author of Welcome to Mars , recently visited the Bourbaki Panorama in Luzern, Switzerland. Panoramas are something like an analog predecessor to iMax and virtual reality. Painted in 1881, the 1,000 square meter Bourbaki Panorama painting was later augmented with mannequins and props to enhance the immersion experience. Ken writes: I recently returned from a brief lecture tour of Switzerland, during the course of which I was taken to the Bourbaki Panorama while in Lucerne: an amazing reconstruction of the French army's demoralized retreat across the Swiss border after being defeated and demobilized by the Germans in 1871 - Bourbaki is the name of the French army's commander who made an unsuccessful attempt to commit suicide rather than live with the shame - the Panorama is located at the top of large purpose-built roundhouse near the lake and features dozens of wax figures set against a painted backdrop... there aren't a lot of pix of it on the web, and you're not allowed to take photographs while you're in there, but this attached one (click image to enlarge) gives you a good idea of how it's put together. The use of telegraph wires and train tracks, cattle cars etc to suggest shifts in distance and dimension is particularly skillful.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search General Charles Denis Bourbaki. Charles Denis Sauter Bourbaki (22 April 1816 – 27 September 1897) was a French general. He was born at Pau , the son of Greek colonel Constantin Denis Bourbaki , who died in the War of Independence in 1827. He was educated at the Prytanée National Militaire , entered St Cyr , and in 1836 joined the Zouaves , becoming lieutenant of the Foreign Legion in 1838, and aide-de-camp to King Louis Philippe . It was in the African expedition that he first came to the front. In 1842 he was captain in the Zouaves ; 1847, colonel of the Turcos ; in 1850, lieutenant-colonel of the 1st Zouaves ; 1851, colonel; 1854, brigadier-general. In the Crimean War he commanded a portion of the Algerian troops; and at the Alma Inkerman and Sevastopol Bourbaki's name became famous. In 1857 he was made general of division, commanding in 1859 at Lyons. His success in the war in Italy was second only to that of MacMahon , and in 1862 he was proposed as a candidate for the vacant Greek throne , but declined the proffered honour. In 1870 the emperor entrusted him with the command of the Imperial Guard, and he played an important part in the fighting round Metz.

    Nicolas Bourbaki
Home Library Science Dictionary of Scientists French group of mathematicians ‘Bourbaki’ is the collective nom de plume of a group of some of the most outstanding of contemporary mathematicians. The precise membership of Bourbaki, which naturally has changed over the years, is a closely guarded secret but it is known that most of the members are French. Since 1939, Bourbaki has been publishing a monumental work, the Eléments de mathématique (Elements of Mathematics), of which over thirty volumes have so far appeared. In this Bourbaki attempts to expound and display the architecture of the whole mathematical edifice starting from certain carefully chosen logical and set-theoretic concepts. The emphasis throughout the Eléments is on the interrelationships to be found between the various structures present in mathematics, and to a certain extent this means that Bourbaki's exposition cuts across traditional boundaries, such as that between algebra and topology. Indeed for Bourbaki, pure mathematics is to be thought of as nothing other than the study of pure structure. Since the members of Bourbaki are all working mathematicians, rather than pure logicians, in contrast to other foundational enterprises (e.g. those of Gottlob Frege, Bertrand Russell, and A. N. Whitehead) the influence of Bourbaki's writings on contemporary mathematicians and their conception of the subject has been immense.

    Nicolas Bourbaki
An important movement in twentieth-century mathematics was generated by the polycephalic mathematician Nicolas Bourbaki who published, beginning in 1939, a series of books which presented advanced mathematics in a highly abstract format. Much folklore has grown up around him, so this is an interesting topic for investigation. You are encouraged to read some of his works, either in the original French or in English translation. One novelty of the works are the historical notes that are attached. Read some of them and discuss what you think of them as history. These notes have been collected into a single volume entitled Elements of the History of Mathematics , translated from the French by John Meldrum , Springer, c1994. An interesting side project would be to compare portions of this to what you can find in the standard histories of mathematics on the same topic.
