Please see the relevant discussion on the talk page (October 2008) Mathematics in China emerged independently by the 11th century BC. The Chinese independently developed very large and negative numbers decimals , a place value decimal system , a binary system algebra geometry trigonometry Many believe that Chinese mathematics and the mathematics of the ancient Mediterranean world had developed more or less independently up to the time when The Nine Chapters on the Mathematical Art reached its final form, while the Writings on Reckoning and Huainanzi preceded it. It is often suggested that some Chinese mathematical discoveries predate their Western counterparts. One example is the Pythagorean theorem . There is some controversy regarding this issue and the precise nature of this knowledge in early China. The Chinese were one of the most advanced in dealing with mathematical computations, being the earliest to use place value decimal calculation notation, about one millennium earlier than other civilization. Elements of "Pythagorean" science have been found, for example, in one of the oldest Classical Chinese texts (see

Chinese Mathematicians Sun-tzi (? ~ ?) Following the Han period lived the mathematician Sun-tzi, who wrote a book containing much material similar to that of the Arithmetic in Nine Sections. It is in this work that we encounter the first Chinese problem in indeterminate analysis : “There are things of an unknown number which when divided by 3 leave 2, by 5 leave 3 and by 7 leave 2. What is the smallest number?” Here we find the beginnings of the famous Chinese Remainder Theorem of elementary number theory. Wang Fan (? ~ ?) Tsu Ch’ung-chih (430 AD-501AD) Ch’in Kiu-shao, Li Yeh, Yang Hui, Chu Shi-kie The latter part of the Sung Dynasty through the early part of the Yuan Dynasty marks the greatest period in ancient Chinese mathematics. Many important mathematicians flourished and many worthy mathematical books appeared. Among the mathematicians were Ch’in Kiu-shao, Li Yeh, Yang Hui, and the greatest of all, Ch’in Shi-kie. Ch’in took up indeterminate equations where Sun Tzi had left off. He was also the first Chinese to give a separate symbol, “0” for zero. He was one of the mathematicians who generalized the method of extracting square roots (as given in the Arithmetic in Nine Sections) to equations of higher degrees, leading to the numerical method of solving algebraic equations we today refer to as Horner’s method, since it was independently found by the English schoolmaster, William George Horner (1786-1837) and published by him in 1819. He was completely unaware of the fact that he had rediscovered an ancient Chinese computational scheme.

Recently it is massively hyped on Chinese news media that "two Chinese
mathematicians added the final brick to Poincare's Conjecture". I can't
find any international news media confirming it, except China's
    government news agency Xinhua Agency:
    http://english.people.com.cn/200606/04/eng20060604_270860.html

The English Wikipedia and MathWorld don't mention it either.
Do these Chinese mathematicians (Cao and Zhu) really make a critical
    contribution to the Conjecture?
If, as the article states, "Cao and Zhu put the finishing touches to
mathematicians around the world, said Professor Shing-Tung Yau, a mathematician at Harvard University" then it is most likely true. Shing-Tung Yau is an eminent differential geometer who won the Fields Medal in 1982. He also seems to be the first internationally renowned mathematician who has been willing to assert that the Daniel Asimov

    Problems and Puzzles
Many people have long had a tendency to associate problems and puzzles with the 'Chinese' but nobody really knows why they have been given this East Asian origin. One suggestion is that perhaps the Europeans were inclined to ascribe puzzles the name of what was, to them, a puzzling civilization.
Diagram 13.Puzzle of the Rings. The above picture describes the 'Puzzle of the Chinese Rings'. This problem was first found by Cardan but was later treated at length in mathematical terms by John Wallis in approximately 1685. Lastly, in the nineteenth century it was discussed using binary arithmetic notation by Gros. This puzzle was commonly known in China, at the beginning of this century as 'Ring of Linked Rings' or in Chinese translation as Lien nuan chhuan Another geometrical puzzle related to the Chinese in the rearrangement of a set of wooden pieces (a square, a rhombus and five triangles of different sizes). This puzzle is known as being one of the oldest amusements of the East. To the Chinese this puzzle is known as the 'Seven Subtle Shapes' or Chhi Chhiao . However, to the Europeans it was known as 'tangrams'. This puzzle is related to geometrical dissections, static games and also to the great wealth of geometrical forms employed by Chinese builders through the centuries in the lattice-work of windows.
