Fields Medal
About the photos The Fields Medal is awarded every four years on the occasion of the International Congress of Mathematicians to recognize outstanding mathematical achievement for existing work and for the promise of future achievement. The Fields Medal Committee is chosen by the Executive Committee of the International Mathematical Union and is normally chaired by the IMU President. It is asked to choose at least two, with a strong preference for four, Fields Medallists, and to have regard in its choice to representing a diversity of mathematical fields. A candidate's 40th birthday must not occur before January 1st of the year of the Congress at which the Fields Medals are awarded. The name of the Chair of the Committee is made public, but the names of other members of the Committee remain anonymous until the award of the prize at the Congress. If a former student (Ph.D. thesis only) of a Committee member is seriously considered, such a member shall not continue to serve on the Committee for its final decision.
History of the Fields Medal
At the 1924 International Congress of Mathematicians in Toronto, a resolution was adopted that at each ICM, two gold medals should be awarded to recognize outstanding mathematical achievement. Professor J. C. Fields, a Canadian mathematician who was Secretary of the 1924 Congress, later donated funds establishing the medals, which were named in his honor. In 1966 it was agreed that, in light of the great expansion of mathematical research, up to four medals could be awarded at each Congress.

Fields Medal
The Fields Medal , officially known as International Medal for Outstanding Discoveries in Mathematics, is a prize awarded to two, three, or four mathematician s not over 40 years of age at each International Congress of the International Mathematical Union (IMU), a meeting that takes place every four years. The colloquial name is in honour of Canadian mathematician John Charles Fields , because of the contribution of his estate to the continuation of the prize. The Fields Medal is often viewed as the top honor a mathematician can receive. It comes with a monetary award, which since 2006 is C$ Founded at the behest of Canadian mathematician John Charles Fields , the medal was first awarded in 1936, to Finnish mathematician Lars Ahlfors and American mathematician Jesse Douglas , and has been awarded every four years since 1950. Its purpose is to give recognition and support to younger mathematical researchers who have made major contributions.
Conditions of the award
The Fields Medal is often described as the " Nobel Prize of Mathematics " for the prestige it carries, though in most other ways the relatively new

Fields Medal
Historical Introduction
This is the original letter by Fields creating the endowment for the medals that bear his name. It is thought to have been written during the few months before his death. Notice that no mention is made about the age of the recipients (currently there is a 40 year-old limit), and that the medal should not be attached to any person, private or public, meaning that it shouldn't bear anybody's name. It is proposed to found two gold medals to be awarded at successive International Mathematical Congress for outstanding achievements in mathematics. Because of the multiplicity of the branches of mathematics and taking into account the fact that the interval between such congresses is four years it is felt that at least two medals should be available. The awards would be open to the whole world and would be made by an International Committee. The fund for the founding of the medals is constituted by balance left over after financing the Toronto congress held in 1924. This must be held in trust by the Government or by some body authorized by government to hold and invest such funds. It would seem that a dignified method for handling the matter and one which in this changing world should most nearly secure permanency would be for the Canadian Government to take over the fund and appoint as his custodian say the Prime Minister of the Dominion or the Prime Minister in association with the Minister of Finance. The medals would be struck at the Mint in Ottawa and the duty of the custodian would be simply to hand over the medals at the proper time to the accredited International Committee.

Terence Tao, ‘Mozart of Math,’ is first UCLA math prof to win Fields Medal
Honor is often called the ‘Nobel Prize in Mathematics’
By Stuart Wolpert August 22, 2006 Category: Research Terence Tao became the first mathematics professor in UCLA history to be awarded the prestigious Fields Medal, often described as the "Nobel Prize in mathematics," during the opening ceremony of the International Congress of Mathematicians in Madrid on Aug. 22. In the 70 years the prize has been awarded by the International Mathematical Union, only 48 researchers ever have won it. "Terry is like Mozart; mathematics just flows out of him," said John Garnett, professor and former chair of mathematics at UCLA, "except without Mozart's personality problems; everyone likes him. Mathematicians with Terry's talent appear only once in a generation. He's an incredible talent, and probably the best mathematician in the world right now. Terry can unravel an enormously complicated mathematical problem and reduce it to something very simple." "I'm not surprised," said Tony Chan, dean of the Division of Physical Sciences and professor of mathematics. "Someone like Terry comes along once every few decades. People all over the world say, 'UCLA's so lucky to have Terry Tao.' He has solved important problems in several areas of mathematics that have stumped others for a long time. The way he crosses areas would be like the best heart surgeon also being exceptional in brain surgery. What is also amazing is that Terry is still so young.
