(August 2008) An illustration of Euclid 's proof of the Pythagorean Theorem Greek mathematics , as that term is used in this article, is the mathematics written in Greek , developed from the 6th century BC to the 4th century AD around the Eastern shores of the Mediterranean . Greek mathematicians lived in cities spread over the entire Eastern Mediterranean, from Italy to North Africa, but were united by culture and language . Greek mathematics of the period following Alexander the Great is somecalled Hellenistic mathematics. The word "mathematics" itself derives from the ancient Greek mathema ), meaning "subject of instruction". The study of mathematics for its own sake and the use of generalized mathematical theories and proofs is the key difference between Greek mathematics and those of preceding civilizations.

edit Life and work
Although little is known about the life of Diocles, it is known that he was a contemporary of Apollonius and that he flourished sometime around the end of the third century and the beginning of the second century BC Diocles is thought to be the first person to prove the focal property of the parabola . His name is associated with the geometric curve called the Cissoid of Diocles , which was used by Diocles to solve the problem of doubling the cube . The curve was alluded to by Proclus in his commentary on Euclid and attributed to Diocles by Geminus as early as the beginning of the first century. Fragments of a work by Diocles entitled On burning mirrors were preserved by Eutocius in his commentary of Archimedes On the Sphere and the Cylinder . Historically, On burning mirrors had a large influence on Arabic mathematicians, particularly on al-Haytham , the 11th-century polymath of Cairo whom Europeans knew as "Alhazen". The treatise contains sixteen propositions that are proved by

Heron of Alexandria (ca. 75 AD)

Greek mathematician who was mainly interested in practical studies in mechanics and engineering. He dealt with a number of such problems in his work Dioptra. He is best known today for Proposition 1.8 of his Metrica, which is now known as Heron's formula The manuscript had been lost for centuries until a fragment was discovered in 1894, followed by a complete copy in 1896.

    Archytas
First published Thu Jun 26, 2003; substantive revision Wed Jul 25, 2007 Archytas of Tarentum was a Greek mathematician, political leader and philosopher, active in the first half of the fourth century BC (i.e., during Plato's lifetime). He was the last prominent figure in the early Pythagorean tradition and the dominant political figure in Tarentum, being elected general seven consecutive times. He sent a ship to rescue Plato from the clutches of the tyrant of Syracuse, Dionysius II, in 361, but his personal and philosophical connections to Plato are complex, and there are many signs of disagreement between the two philosophers. A great number of works were forged in Archytas' name starting in the first century BC, and only four fragments of his genuine work survive, although these are supplemented by a number of important testimonia. Archytas was the first to solve one of the most celebrated mathematical problems in antiquity, the duplication of the cube. We also have his proof showing that ratios of the form ( n n , which are important in music theory, cannot be divided by a mean proportional. He was the most sophisticated of the Pythagorean harmonic theorists and provided mathematical accounts of musical scales used by the practicing musicians of his day. He was the first to identify the group of four canonical sciences (logistic [arithmetic], geometry, astronomy and music), which would become known as the
