YOUNG BRITISH AND RUSSIAN MATHEMATICIANS
Following discussions with representatives of the Moscow Mathematical Society and the Russian Academy of Sciences, Council has agreed to change the original scheme established in 2000, as follows. Each year, under the new scheme, up to three young Russian mathematicians will spend a few weeks in Britain giving a series of survey lectures on the work of their Russian seminar, and up to three young British mathematicians will spend a few weeks in Russia giving a series of survey lectures on the work of their school. The LMS will meet the costs of Russian visitors and the travel costs of UK mathematicians, while the host institutions of the Russian Academy of Sciences will meet the latter's local expenses. It is intended that any mathematician in either Britain or Russia may propose to host such a visit. The proposal should include:
(i) name and brief cv of the visitor, (ii) brief description of the course of lectures, and (iiii) letter or email of agreement from the head of the host department.
The Scheme will be operated by the Programme Committee on behalf of the LMS and the Governing Body of Mathematical Sciences Division of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Managing Committee of Moscow Mathematical Society for the Russians.

Famous Women Mathematicians
The field of mathematics has seen some outstanding women power. Here are some contributions of the 'geniuses' who made their mark in this intellectual field.
Enlarge Image Women pursued mathematics, science and philosophy, early in the twentieth century. I have tried to name some and present their greatness in the paragraphs to come:
Hypatia
Hypatia was the first recognized women mathematician . She was born in Alexandria, Egypt, around 350AD and was a recognized scholar. Besides being a mathematician, she was an astute astronomer and a philosopher. She believed in the theories of Plato and Aristotle . An angry Christian mob killed her in, either the year 370 AD or the year 415 AD. There is still much confusion and debate on the exact year of her demise. Her immortal contributions to the mathematical world, paved the way for inexhaustible research on many topics. Her major works are as follows:
  • She wrote a commentary on the 13th volume of the famous Greek mathematics text book, 'Artihmetica'. She edited Ptolemy's famous version of the 'Almagest'.

Description
Yakov Sinai, “Russian Mathematicians in the 20th Century”
In the 20th century, many mathematicians in Russia made great contributions to the field of mathematics. This invaluable book, which presents the main achievements of Russian mathematicians in that century, is the first most comprehensive book on Russian mathematicians. It has been produced as a gesture of respect and appreciation for those mathematicians and it will serve as a good reference and an inspiration for future mathematicians. It presents differences in mathematical styles and focuses on Soviet mathematicians who often discussed "what to do" rather than "how to do it". Thus, the book will be valued beyond historical documentation.
The editor, Professor Yakov Sinai, a distinguished Russian mathematician, has taken pains to select leading Russian mathematicians — such as Lyapunov, Luzin, Egorov, Kolmogorov, Pontryagin, Vinogradov, Sobolev, Petrovski and Krein — and their most important works. One can, for example, find works of Lyapunov, which parallel those of Poincaré; and works of Luzin, whose analysis plays a very important role in the history of Russian mathematics; Kolmogorov has established the foundations of probability based on analysis. The editor has tried to provide some parity and, at the same time, included papers that are of interest even today.
