Women mathematicians by Dubreil-Jacotin
Marie-Louise Dubreil-Jacotin contributed an article about women mathematicians to the original French text of the book translated into English as [F Le Lionnais, Great Currents of Mathematical Thought (London, 1971)]. When she wrote the article, Dubreil-Jacotin was Professor, Science Faculty, Poitiers. Most of the article is about the two women which Dubreil-Jacotin felt had made the most major contribution to mathematics:- However, Dubreil-Jacotin first describes the multitude of contributions made by women to mathematics yet scarcely recognised until recent times. Here is the part of the article in which she makes many important general points about women's contributions:-
... the feeling of mathematical beauty, of the harmony of numbers and of forms, of geometric elegance. It is a genuinely aesthetic feeling, which all mathematicians know. And this is sensitivity. And should not this very sensitivity, contrary to the prejudice, make mathematics a feminine domain? Moreover, if we consider the other sciences, the great inventions whose applications have staggered the world, we do not find any more women's names associated with these areas. Must it then be said, as Maurice d'Ocagne seems to conclude in his that woman is generally destitute of inventive spirit and creative genius? The growth of female education, the overthrow of prejudices, the profound changes in the kind of life and in the role assigned to woman during the last few years will doubtless bring about a revision of her position in science. Then we shall see in what measure she can, as the equal of man, emerge from the role of the excellent pupil or the perfect collaborator, and join those of our scientists whose work has opened new paths and bears the mark of genius.

    Sophie Germain
    April 1, 1776 - June 27, 1831
Written by Amanda Swift, Class of 1995 (Agnes Scott College)
Sophie Germain was born in an era of revolution. In the year of her birth, the American Revolution began. Thirteen years later the French Revolution began in her own country. In many ways Sophie embodied the spirit of revolution into which she was born. She was a middle class female who went against the wishes of her family and the social prejudices of the time to become a highly recognized mathematician. Like the member of a revolution, her life was full of perseverance and hard work. It took a long time for her to be recognized and appreciated for her contributions to the field of mathematics, but she did not give up. Even today, it is felt that she was never given as much credit as she was due for the contributions she made in number theory and mathematical physics because she was a woman. Sophie Germain was born in Paris on April 1, 1776 to Ambroise-Francois and Marie Germain. Her family was quite wealthy. Her father was a merchant and later became a director of the Bank of France.

(355 or 370 - 415) - Greek - philosopher, astronomer, mathematician - She was the salaried head of the Neoplatonic School in Alexandria, Egypt, from the year 400. Her students were pagan and Christian young men from around the empire. She was killed by a mob of Christians in 415, probably inflamed by the bishop of Alexandria, Cyril. More Info zSB(3,3)

    Maria Gaetana Agnesi
    May 16, 1718 - January 9, 1799
Written by Elif Unlu, Class of 1995 (Agnes Scott College)
Even though her contribution to mathematics are very important, Maria Gaetana Agnesi was not a typical famous mathematician. She led a quite simple life and she gave up mathematics very early. At first glance her life may seem to be boring, however, considering the circumstances in which she was raised, her accomplishments to mathematics are glorious. Enjoy! During the Middle Ages, under the influence of Christendom, many European countries were opposed to any form of higher education for females. Women were mostly deprived from the fundamental elements of education, such as reading and writing, claiming that these were a source of temptation and sin. For the most part, learning was confined to monasteries and nunneries which constituted the only opportunity for education open to girls during the Middle Ages. After the fall of Constantinople (today Istanbul), many scholars migrated to Rome, bringing Europe knowledge and critical thinking, which in turn gave rise to the Renaissance. However, except in Italy, the status of women throughout Europe changed very slowly. In Italy, however, where the Renaissance had its origin, women made their mark on the academic world. Intellectual women were admired by men, they were never ridiculed for being intellectual and educated. This attitude enabled Italian women to participate in arts, medicine, literature, and mathematics. Among many others, Maria Gaetana Agnesi was by far one of the most important and extraordinary figure in mathematics during the 18th century.
