December 17, 1706 - September 10, 1749
Written by Sasha Mandic, Class of 1997 (Agnes Scott College)
In spite of her talents in the area of languages, her true love was mathematics. Her study in this area was encouraged by a family friend, M. de Mezieres, who recognized the young lady's talent. Emilie's work in mathematics was rarely original or as captivating as that of other female mathematicians but it was substantive. The fact that it was accomplished in the first place is in itself remarkable. Emilie's astuteness was prominent in other areas as well. She was described as being somewhat of a "passionate nature", never lacking for romantic attachments either before or after her marriage. At the age of nineteen she married the thirty-four-year-old Marquis du Châtelet. During the first two years of their marriage, Emilie gave birth to a boy and a girl, and later the birth of another son followed when she was twenty-seven. Neither children nor her husband deterred her from fully indulging in the social life of the court. Emilie not only refused to give up mathematics but she engaged the best known tutors to help her in her study. She also conquered the heart of Voltaire, one of most intriguing and brilliant scholars of this time. Some of Emilie's most significant work came from the period she spent with Voltaire at Cirey-sur-Blaise. For the two scholars this was a safe and quiet haven distant from the turbulence of Paris and court life. As Voltaire notes "We long employed all our attention and powers upon Leibniz and Newton; Mme du Châtelet attached herself first to Leibniz, and explained one part of his system in a book exceedingly well written, entitled

Famous Women Mathematicians
The field of mathematics has seen some outstanding women power. Here are some contributions of the 'geniuses' who made their mark in this intellectual field.
Enlarge Image Women pursued mathematics, science and philosophy, early in the twentieth century. I have tried to name some and present their greatness in the paragraphs to come:
Hypatia
Hypatia was the first recognized women mathematician . She was born in Alexandria, Egypt, around 350AD and was a recognized scholar. Besides being a mathematician, she was an astute astronomer and a philosopher. She believed in the theories of Plato and Aristotle . An angry Christian mob killed her in, either the year 370 AD or the year 415 AD. There is still much confusion and debate on the exact year of her demise. Her immortal contributions to the mathematical world, paved the way for inexhaustible research on many topics. Her major works are as follows:
  • She wrote a commentary on the 13th volume of the famous Greek mathematics text book, 'Artihmetica'. She edited Ptolemy's famous version of the 'Almagest'.

posted by moz at 12:48 PM on October 9, 2002 About as good as could be asked for from a college-student project, but should be supplemented with the much more comprehensive Association for Women in Mathematics biography page ; the Canadian Mathematical Society has a similar page posted by languagehat at 1:00 PM on October 9, 2002 The site's creator is a professor. posted by MrMoonPie at 1:05 PM on October 9, 2002 It always struck me as odd that there aren't more female mathematicians and computer programmers. Neither job requires great physical strength. Both require an analytical mind, attention to detail and perseverance, areas in which women are at least as good as men. Maybe women crave more social interaction than either of these jobs typically provides? I don't know about mathematicians, but I have a feeling the Internet is making social skills more important for programmers. Hopefully we'll see more females in the field before long.
