One-on-one with UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan
Ebony Oct, 1998 by Kevin Chappell
West African diplomat gives color and credibility to top position at world peacekeeping Organization The revving sound continues to reverberate in his head. And even now, Kofi Annan finds it hard to fathom why a gang of motorcycle-mounted photographers chased him through the streets of Florence, Italy, earlier this year. It's not like he was a movie star or a basketball iconhe was "only" the secretary-general of the United Nations on his way to church. When did career diplomats become a part of the paparazzi's hit list anyway? Well, they're not. But world heroes are. And although Annan denies that he has become a world hero, the first Black UN chief has become one of the world's most sought-alter personalities. Since persuading Iraq's Saddam Hussein to agree to a settlement that averted a major international crisis, interest in Annan's position has reached far beyond the handshakes of heads of state. And although the Iraq crisis continues to unfold, he is now known far outside the walls of the palaces, estates, castles and compounds that bound his predecessors.

Annan, Kofi
Kofi Atta Annan, the first black African to occupy the post of Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), was born as one of a set of twins in Kumasi, Ghana, on 8 April 1938. His twin sister died in 1991. His parents, Henry Reginald and Victoria Annan, lived at the Atlantic coast, but the young Annan spent most of his childhood in the inland town of Bekwai, where his father worked for Unilever. His father was a tribal chief of the Fante people, and was later elected as governor of the Ashanti province. Between 1954-1957 he attended Mfantsipim School, an elite Methodist institution in central Ghana, and went to the University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana, in 1958 where he earned a Ford Foundation grant, which made it possible for him to study at Macalester College in Minnesota, USA. He then studied at the Institute for Advanced International Studies in Geneva, Switzerland. Kofi (meaning "born on a Friday") Annan received a postgraduate certificate in economics from the Institute for Advanced International Studies in Geneva, Switzerland. The "international" diplomat speaks several African languages, English, and French. From 1962 to 1971 he worked for the World Health Organization in Geneva as an administration and budget officer. Being a great student he received a master's degree in management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1972. For two years (1974 to 1976) he left the UN to work as the Managing Director of the Ghana Tourist Development Company.

Former secretaries-general
KOFI A. ANNAN of Ghana , the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations, served from 1997 to 2006 and was the first to emerge from the ranks of United Nations staff. One of Mr. Annan's main priorities as Secretary-General w as a comprehensive programme of reform aimed at revitalizing the United Nations and making the international system more effective. He was a constant advocate for human rights, the rule of law, the Millennium Development Goals and Africa , and sought to bring the Organization closer to the global public by forging ties with civil society, the private sector and other partners. At Mr. Annan's initiative, UN peacekeeping was strengthened in ways that enabled the United Nations to cope with a rapid rise in the number of operations and personnel. It was also at Mr. Annan's urging that, in 2005, Member States established two new intergovernmental bodies: the Peacebuilding Commission and the Human Rights Council. Mr. Annan likewise played a central role in the creation of the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, the adoption of the UN's first-ever counter-terrorism strategy, and the acceptance by Member States of the “responsibility to protect” people from genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity. His “Global Compact” initiative, launched in 1999, has become the world's largest effort to promote corporate social responsibility.

Annan was instrumental in introducing specific development targets in 2000 known as the Millennium Development Goals. All member states of the UN committed to fulfillment of the goals by the year 2015. In addition, Annan worked hard to strengthen the bond between the UN system and the many international nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) that are affiliated with the UN. He recognized that these organizations and civil society in general were affecting positive change in the lives of people in developing nations. He also recognized that these NGOs are the eyes and ears of the UN in the field. On January 1, 2007, Annan was succeeded as UN secretary-general by
