He won a share of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1970 along with Bernard Katz and Ulf von Euler . The Nobel Committee honored him for his work on the release and reuptake of catecholamine neurotransmitters , a class of chemicals in the brain that include epinephrine norepinephrine , and, as was later discovered, dopamine . Axelrod also made major contributions to the understanding of the pineal gland and how it is regulated during the sleep-wake cycle.

All Visuals Julius Axelrod (1912-2004) was an American pharmacologist and neuroscientist who shared the 1970 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his discovery of the actions of neurotransmitters in regulating the metabolism of the nervous system. The National Library of Medicine is the repository for the Julius Axelrod Papers, which range from 1910 to 2004. The Julius Axelrod Papers contain laboratory notebooks, research reports, published articles and books, correspondence, unpublished manuscripts, speeches, news clippings, and photographs. As part of its Profiles in Science project, the National Library of Medicine is digitizing and making available over the World Wide Web a selection of the Julius Axelrod Papers, for use by educators and researchers. This Web site provides access to the portions of the Julius Axelrod Papers that are now publicly available. Individuals interested in conducting research in the Julius Axelrod Papers are invited to contact the National Library of Medicine.

Biochimiste et pharmacologue américain, Julius Axelrod a reçu le prix Nobel de physiologie ou médecine en 1970 pour ses travaux fondamentaux sur les neurotransmetteurs, qui ont permis de mieux comprendre la physiologie du système nerveux central et qui ont été à l'origine du développement de nouveaux médicaments.  Collégien aux résultats moyens, Axelrod, né à New York en 1912, se voit refuser l'accès à Stuyvesant, un lycée renommé de New York. Devenu étudiant, il s'inscrit, faute de moyens financiers, au City College. De cet « Harvard prolétarien », comme il l'appellera plus tard, il sort major en biologie et chimie. Malgré ce succès, aucune de ses demandes d'inscription en médecine n'est acceptée, en raison des quotas visant les étudiants juifs, alors en vigueur aux États-Unis.  Axelrod devient alors, en 1935, technicien dans le laboratoire d'Hygiène industrielle de la ville de New York.     Dr. Axelrod is a Member of Sigma Xi, International Brain Research Organization, American Chemical Society, American Society of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, American Society of Biological Chemists, American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a Fellow of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology, 1961 (Member of the Council, 1966-1969).
