Baltimore, David
(b. March 7, 1938, New York, N.Y., U.S.), American virologist who shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1975 with his former professor, Renato Dulbecco , and another of Dulbecco's students, Howard M. Temin After graduating from Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, Baltimore was trained in virology at Rockefeller Institute (New York City), where he obtained his Ph.D. in 1964, and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He worked with Dulbecco at the Salk Institute in La Jolla, Calif. (1965-68), then returned to MIT to join its faculty. In 1989 he figured prominently in a public dispute over an MIT colleague who was subsequently found to have committed fraud in a research paper, though Baltimore himself was not included in the charges of misconduct. In 1990 he became president of Rockefeller University (New York City) in the face of some faculty criticism of his role in the MIT research-paper affair. After 18 months of continued controversy over the matter, Baltimore resigned his position as president but remained a member of the Rockefeller University faculty. In their work that led to the Nobel Prize, Baltimore and Temin discovered independently that some animal cancer viruses that are composed mainly of

Autobiography
My interest in Biology began when I was a high school student and spent a summer at the Jackson Memorial Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine. There I first experienced research biology and saw research biologists at work; this experience led me to become a biology major in college.
I went on to Swarthmore College where I began as a major in biology but switched to chemistry later so that I could carry out a research thesis. Between my last two years at Swarthmore I spent a summer at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories working with Dr. George Streisinger, and the experience of working with and watching that great teacher led me to molecular biology.
I started graduate school at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in biophysics, but when I decided to work on animal viruses I left M.I.T. to study for a summer with Dr. Philip Marcus at the Albert Einstein Medical College and to take the animal virus course at Cold Spring Harbor, then taught by Dr. Richard Franklin and Dr. Edward Simon. I joined Dr. Franklin at the Rockefeller Institute to do my thesis work and then continued in animal virology as a postdoctoral fellow with Dr. James Darnell. I had already found that much could be learned by studying virus-specific enzymes, so I studied for a while with Dr. Jerard Hurwitz at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine to learn from someone who knew enzymology as a professional.

    Baltimore, David
Baltimore, David u r) [ key Dulbecco and Howard Temin for his study on the connections between viruses and cancer. Appointed president of Rockefeller Univ. in 1990, he resigned the next year after a scientific fraud scandal. A paper he coauthored was said to contain fraudulent data from another author, Dr. Thereza Imanishi-Kari, and Baltimore was criticized for his vehement defense of the paper despite the evidence. In 1996, an appeals panel overturned the verdict of the original investigating office, the federal Office of Scientific Integrity (now the Office of Reasearch Integrity), and Baltimore and Imanishi-Kari were exonerated. In 1997 Baltimore was appointed president of the California Institute of Technology. See D. J.
