KBE MC FRSC (November 14, 1891 – February 21, 1941) was a Canadian medical scientist, doctor and Nobel laureate noted as one of the co-discoverers of insulin In 1940 Banting and John James Rickard Macleod received the Nobel Prize in Medicine. Banting shared the award money with his colleague, Dr. Charles Best . The Canadian government gave him a lifetime annuity to work on his research. In 1934 King George V bestowed a knighthood on him, making him Sir Frederick Banting. In 2004, Frederick Banting was voted 4th place on

Known to many as the co-discoverer of insulin, Frederick Banting won the Nobel prize for Medicine, together with Dr. Charles Best, and Dr. J. J. R. MacLeod in 1923. For this remarkable contribution to medicine, he was knighted in 1934. Born in 1891 in Alliston, Ontario, Banting Historical House in London, Ontario is named in his honor.
Vowing to retire from medical research at age 50 and paint full time, Banting was tragically killed in an air crash while serving with the Canadian National Defence Associate Committee on Aviation Medical Research in 1941. He was 49. His work was exhibited in a retrospective at Hart House, University of Toronto in 1943, at the Art Gallery of Ontario, Queens University, and the Art Gallery of Alberta. He is represented in both public and private collections in Canada.

    Banting, Sir Frederick Grant, , Canadian physician, M.D. Univ. of Toronto, 1922. From 1923 he was professor of medical research at Toronto. Working with C. H. Best under the direction of J. J. R. Macleod, he succeeded in isolating (1921) from the pancreas the hormone later called insulin. For this he shared with Macleod the 1923 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. He was knighted in 1934. Besides his work on insulin, he made valuable studies of the cortex of the adrenal glands, of cancer, and of silicosis and stimulated research in aviation medicine.
