Becquerel published his findings in many papers, principally in the Annales de Physique et de Chimie and the Comptes Rendus de l'Academie des Sciences. He was elected a member of the Academie des Sciences de France in 1889 and succeeded Berthelot as Life Secretary of that body. He was a member also of the Accademia dei Lincei and of the Royal Academy of Berlin, amongst others. He was made an Officer of the Legion of Honour in 1900. He was married to Mlle. Janin, the daughter of a civil engineer. They had a son Jean, b. 1878, who was also a physicist: the fourth generation of scientists in the Becquerel family. Antoine Henri Becquerel died at Le Croisic on August 25, 1908. From Nobel Lectures, Physics 1901-1921.

excite fluorescence in certain substances. Becquerel immediately decided to see whether phosphorescent substances emitted rays, similar to X-rays, by placing the substances on a photographic plate which was wrapped in black paper, and exposing them to sunlight. Only when using salts of uranium did he obtain fogging of the plate, showing that the radiations came from these salts only. It was then, almost by chance, that Becquerel was led to realize that these radiations were of unknown origin.
Because the weather had become cloudy, Becquerel put all his material into a drawer and awaited a sunny day. As a check, he then developed the photographic plate and found that the fogging had again occurred, even though the uranium salt could not have phosphoresced since it had been in darkness for some days.
After further work, and by noting that his newly discovered rays could pass through metal plates and still fog the photographic plate, though less intensely, Becquerel found that all salts of uranium, and the metal uranium itself, continuously give off invisible rays. he had discovered that uranium is radioactive.

(b . Dec. 15, 1852, Parisd. Aug. 25, 1908, Le Croisic, Fr.), French physicist who discovered radioactivity through his investigations of uranium and other substances. In 1903 he shared the Nobel Prize for Physics with Pierre and Marie Curie.
Education and training.
Electricity, magnetism, optical phenomena, and energy were major areas of physical investigation during the 19th century. For several years the young man's research was concerned with the rotation of plane-polarized light by magnetic fields, a subject opened by Michael Faraday and to which Henri's father had also contributed. Henri then concerned himself with infrared radiation, examining, among other things, the spectra of different phosphorescent crystals under infrared stimulation. Of particular significance, he extended the work of his father by studying the relation between absorption of light and emission of phosphorescence in some uranium compounds.
Systematic study of radiation.

Becquerel Antoine Henri
He was a french Physicist and a nobel laureate. he discovered radioactivity in uranium. He was the son of alexander Becquerel, who studied light and phosphorescence. he was the grandson of one of the founders of electrochemistry.
He was born in Paris. He became a professor of Physics at the museum of Natural History. He discovered radioactivity accidentally while researching on fluorescence. He proved that uranium must give off its own energy which became know as radioactivity.
He also conducted important research on phosphorescence, spectroscopy, and absorption of light. His work include Recherches sur la phosphorescence and Decouverte des radiations invisibles emises par l'uranium.
