    Biography
Menachem Begin was born in Brest-Litovsk, Poland on 16 August 1913, son of Zeev-Dov and Hassia Begin. He was educated at the Mizrachi Hebrew School and the Polish Gymnasium (High School). In 1931, he entered Warsaw University and took his law degree in 1935.
Until the age of 13 he belonged to the Hashomer Hatza'ir scout movement, and at the age of 16 joined Betar (Brit Trumpeldor), the nationalist youth movement associated with the Zionist Revisionist Movement. In 1932 he became head of the Organization Department of Betar for Poland travelling on its behalf throughout the country, and contributing many articles to the revisionist press. He was sent to Czechoslovakia to head the movement there.
In 1937 he returned to Poland, and for a time was imprisoned for leading a demonstration, in front of the British Legation in Warsaw, protesting against British policy in Palestine. He organized groups of Betar members who went to Palestine as illegal immigrants, and in 1939 became the head of the movement in Poland. On the outbreak of World War II, he was arrested by the Russian authorities and in 1940-41 was confined in concentration camps in Siberia and elsewhere, but was released under the terms of the Stalin-Sikorski agreement.

    • Born: 16 August 1913 Birthplace: Brest-Litovsk, Belarus Died: 9 March 1992 Best Known As: The prime minister who signed the Camp David accords
Menachem Begin was prime minister of Israel from 1977-1983. Begin was born in Russia (like another future prime minister, Golda Meir ), and he studied in Poland, where he joined Zionist forces to fight anti-Semitism. He moved to Palestine in 1940 and became the commander of the Irgun, a guerrilla force responsible for terrorist acts against Arab and British military and civilian posts. Elected to the Knesset in 1949, he represented conservatives for over two decades before becoming head of the Likud party in 1973. In 1977 he formed a coalition government and became prime minister. As such, Begin signed a historic peace treaty with Egypt in 1979 the so-called Camp David accords, brokered by U.S. President Jimmy Carter . Begin shared the Nobel Prize with Egyptian leader Anwar Sadat . But later he was criticized for the 1982 invasion and occupation of Lebanon (led by Ariel Sharon ). Begin resigned as prime minister in 1983, and lived in relative seclusion until his death nine years later.

Begin, Menachem Begin, (1913-1992), served as prime minister of Israel from 1977 to 1983. The leader of the conservative Likud Party, he came to power after the party won a majority of the seats in the Knesset (Israeli parliament). After the 1981 elections, the Likud Party and smaller conservative parties formed a coalition, and Begin remained prime minister. Begin resigned from office in 1983.
In 1978, Begin, President Anwar el-Sadat of Egypt, and President Jimmy Carter held discussions in the United States about ways to end the Arab-Israeli conflict. The discussions resulted in a major agreement that included plans for Israel's withdrawal from Egypt's Sinai Peninsula. The agreement also called for a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt. In addition, the agreement provided for Palestinian autonomy in two Israel-occupied territories the West Bank, formerly ruled by Jordan; and the Gaza Strip, formerly administered by Egypt. Begin and Sadat shared the 1978 Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to end the Arab-Israeli conflict. The treaty was signed in 1979. Israel's withdrawal from the Sinai Peninsula was completed in 1982. Israel began to provide for Palestinian autonomy in 1994.
In 1981, Begin's government claimed legal and political authority over Syria's Golan Heights. Syria and many other countries denounced this claim. Israel had gained control of the area in a war against Syria in 1967. Although Israel's relations with Egypt improved under Begin, relations with other Arab nations remained hostile. But their trips were canceled. While the graveside ceremony for Begin may have been simple, the funeral attracted a crowd of mourners estimated by police at 75,000. Thousands of mourners, many in tears, walked the 2 1/2 miles from the funeral home to the cemetery. A fleet of 50 busses carried others through streets that had been closed to traffic. After the family and dignitaries had left the grave, thousands of onlookers broke through the human chain of police to pay their last respects. Some kissed the freshly dug grave, some saluted and others just laid stones on the mound of earth. Begin had lived a reclusive life since his departure from office nine years ago. But he was frequently hospitalized, twice for a broken hip. His cardiac history antedated his accession to high office. Begin suffered his first heart attack in 1977, the year he led Likud to an upset victory over the long-entrenched Labour Party. After taking office, he was treated for pericarditis, an inflammation of the sac that encloses the heart. Begin was stricken with his final illness on March 3, 1993 when he collapsed in the suburban Tel Aviv home where he lived with his daughter, Leah. He was rushed unconscious to Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv, where he was initially diagnosed as having had a stroke. He was placed on a breathing machine in an intensive care unit and regained consciousness after 20 hours in a coma. Doctors had determined by then that he had in fact suffered a heart attack. A pacemaker was implanted in his chest on March 5 to control his irregular heartbeat.

Begin received a law degree from the University of Warsaw in 1935. Active in the Zionist movement throughout the 1930s, he became (1938) the leader of the Polish branch of the Betar youth movement, dedicated to the establishment of a Jewish state on both sides of the Jordan River. Begin joined the militant Irgun Zvai Leumi and was its commander from 1943 to 1948. After Israel's independence in 1948 the Irgun formed the H erut ("Freedom" ) Party with Begin as its head and leader of the opposition in the Knesset (Parliament) until 1967.
