His father was the physiologist Albrecht Bethe . He was educated at the Goethe Gymnasium (1915-24),the University of Frankfurt am Main (1924-1926), where he studied for two years, then finished his studies at Munich (1926-1928). He obtained his Ph. D. in theoretical physics under Arnold Sommerfeld in 1928. He was then appointed instructor of physics at Frankfurt for one semester, at Stuttgart for another semester, finally becoming Privatdozent at the University of Munich in 1930, a position that he held for only three years. After the rise of the Nazis in Germany, Bethe emigrated to England in October 1933, holding a temporary position as lecturer at the University of Manchester (1933-1934) and at University of Bristol (1934-1935). In February 1935, he was appointed assistant professor at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. He was subsequently promoted to professor in 1937, a position he has held even since (as professor emeritus since 1975). Bethe subsequently became a U.S. citizen in 1941. During the World War II, Bethe worked on microwave radar at the Radiation Laboratory of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and then he served as director of theoretical physics of the

He was born in 1906 and moved to the United States in 1935 to teach at Cornell University. He was the Director of the Theoretical Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory and participated at the most senior level in the World War II Manhattan Project that produced the first atomic weapons. During 1935-1938, he studied nuclear reactions and reaction cross sections. This research was useful to Bethe in more quantitatively developing Neil Bohr's theory of the compound nucleus. During the '80s and '90s he campaigned for the peaceful use of nuclear energy. He is most noted for his theories on atomic properties. In 1967, Bethe was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his work in solar and stellar energy. In 1995, at the age of 88, Bethe wrote an open letter calling on all scientists to "cease and Printer Friendly

Looking back at the half century since that time, I feel the most intense relief that these weapons have not been used since World War II, mixed with the horror that tens of thousands of such weapons have been built since that time one hundred times more than any of us at Los Alamos could ever have imagined.

Biography
German-American physicist, famous for his research into the energy and formation of stars. He was a key figure in the development of the atomic bomb as chief of the theoretical physics division of Los Alamos. The Bethe carbon cycle is named after him, the first explanation of solar and stellar energy which met all the known facts. He won the 1967 Nobel Prize for physics for his contribution to the theory of nuclear reactions. The son of a Jewish mother, he fled Germany in 1933 to England, then moved to the United States in 1935 where he became a naturalized citizen. Hans Albrecht Bethe was an only child in a family where university professors had proliferated for generations. His father was an eminent German physiologist who had written much on the nervous system and who held both an M. D. and Ph.D. Young Bethe attended the Goethe Gymnasium in Frankfurt-am-Main and the University of Frankfurt. He received his doctorate in 1928 from the University of Munich. As a Ph.D. candidate, he was the first person to apply the "new" system of quantum mechanics to solving problems. His first papers, "Scattering of Electrons by Crystals" and "Theory of the Diffraction of Electrals" both appeared in 1927.
