Born in Zürich, Switzerland. He was educated there and at the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule, also in Zürich. Initially studying engineering he soon changed to physics. Graduating in 1927 he continued his physics studies at the University of Leipzig, gaining his doctorate in 1928. He remained in German academia, studying with Heisenberg, Wolfgang Pauli, Bohr and Enrico Fermi. In 1933 he left Germany, emigrating to work at Stanford University in 1934. He was naturalised in 1939. During WW II he worked on atomic energy at Los Alamos National Laboratory, before resigning to join the radar project at Harvard University. Post-war he concentrated on investigations into nuclear induction and nuclear magnetism. For his work on nuclear magnetism he shared the 1952 Nobel Prize in Physics with Edward Mills Purcell. In 1954–1955, he served for one unsatisfactory year as the first Director-General of CERN. In 1961, he was made Max Stein Professor of Physics at Stanford University. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search For the Swiss physicist, see Felix Bloch Felix Bloch (born 19 July 1935) is a former director of European and Canadian Affairs in the US Department of State . He is known in connection with Robert Hanssen espionage case. Hanssen was a Soviet spy who reported to his KGB handlers about the ongoing FBI investigations of Felix Bloch and Reino Gikman to save both agents from a possible arrest. Gikman escaped to Moscow and made a warning phone call to Bloch only later. FBI intercepted this and other espionage-related phone calls, but was unable to collect enough evidence to bring this case to the court. Bloch served a total of 32 years at the State Department

Bloch was born in Zürich , Switzerland to Jewish parents Gustav and Agnes Bloch. He was educated there and at the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule , also in Zürich. Initially studying engineering he soon changed to physics . During this time he attended lectures and seminars given by Peter Debye and Hermann Weyl at ETH Zürich and Erwin Schrödinger at the neighboring University of Zürich . A fellow student in these seminars was John von Neumann . Graduating in 1927 he continued his physics studies at the University of Leipzig with Werner Heisenberg , gaining his doctorate in 1928. His doctoral thesis established the quantum theory of solids, using

Swiss-American physicist who studied in Zurich and Leipzig, but left Germany in 1933. From 1934, he was a professor at Stanford University, CA, which allowed him to become a naturalized American citizen. He contributed primarily to the physics of solids, including their electrical and magnetic properties. In 1952, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for physics. Died on 9/10/1983, Zurich, Switzerland.     Bloch, Felix (1905-1983), a Swiss-American physicist. He shared the 1952 Nobel Prize for physics with Edward M. Purcell. Bloch received the award for developing a method for measuring the magnetic fields of atomic nuclei. Bloch was born in Zurich, Switzerland. He received a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Leipzig in 1928. During 1929-34, he held several teaching positions in Europe. In 1934 he emigrated to the United States. Bloch became a United States citizen in 1939. He was a professor of physics at Stanford University, 1939-71.
