Bloch, Felix
(b Bloch taught at the University of Leipzig until 1933; when Adolf Hitler came to power he emigrated to the United States and was naturalized in 1939. After joining the faculty of Stanford University, Palo Alto, Calif., in 1934, he proposed a method for splitting a beam of neutrons into two components that corresponded to the two possible orientations of a neutron in a magnetic field. In 1939, using this method, he and Luis Alvarez (winner of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1968) measured the magnetic moment of the neutron (a property of its magnetic field). Bloch worked on atomic energy at Los Alamos, N.M., and radar countermeasures at Harvard University during World War II and returned to Stanford in 1945 to develop, with physicists W.W. Hansen and M.E. Packard, the principle of nuclear induction, which helped establish the relationship between nuclear magnetic fields and the crystalline and magnetic properties of various materials. Nuclear induction later became useful in determining the composition and structure of molecules. Nuclear magnetic resonance techniques have become increasingly important in diagnostic medicine. Bloch was the first director general of the European Commission for Nuclear Research (1954-55).

Bloch, Felix
Felix Bloch
was born in Zurich, Switzerland, on October 23, 1905, as the son of Gustav Bloch and Agnes Bloch ( Mayer). From 1912 to 1918 he attended the public primary school and subsequently the "Gymnasium" of the Canton of Zurich, which he left in the fall of 1924 after having passed the "Matura", i.e. the final examination which entitled him to attend an institution of higher learning.

, Kramers, Heisenberg Bohr , and Fermi , and to further theoretical studies of the solid state as well as of the stopping power of charged particles.
During the war years Dr. Bloch was also engaged in the early stages of the work on atomic energy at Stanford University and Los Alamos and later in counter-measures against radar at Harvard University. Through this latter work he became acquainted with the modern developments of electronics which, toward the end of the war, suggested to him, in conjunction with his earlier work on the magnetic moment of the neutron, a new approach toward the investigation of nuclear moments.
These investigations were begun immediately after his return to Stanford in the fall of 1945 and resulted shortly afterward in collaboration with W.W. Hansen and M.E. Packard in the new method of nuclear induction, a purely electromagnetic procedure for the study of nuclear moments in solids, liquids, or gases. A few weeks after the first successful experiments he received the news of the same discovery having been made independently and simultaneously by E.M. Purcell and his collaborators at Harvard.

  • Bloch, Felix
American physicist, member of the National Academy of Sciences (1948). After graduating Higher Engineering School in Zurich and University of Leipzig (1928) he headed the Department of Theoretical Physics in Stanford University (1934). Professor since 1936, in 1942-1945 he worked on atomic energy at the Laboratory in Los-Alamos. Being one of the promulgators of the quantum theory of solids, Bloch developed the theory of energy spectrum of crystals, magnetization dependence of ferromagnets with temperatures close to absolute zero and was the first who suggested the term of spin waves. In 1946 Bloch discovered the nuclear magnetic resonance independently from Purcell and shared (with Purcell) the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1952.

  • Gorter, Cornelius Jacob
The works by Netherlands physicist, member of Netherlands Academy of Sciences (1946), and the Academy President (1960-1966) C.J.Gorter were devoted to physics of solids, low-temperature physics, superconductivity and magnetism. In 1934 Gorter (together with H.Kazimir) developed a phenomenological theory of superconductivity and predicted Meissner effect. He also discovered paramagnetic relaxation (1936) and antiferromagnetic resonance (1951).

Felix Mendelssohn wrote his first symphony at the young age of fifteen. Jacob Ludwig Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, always known simply as Felix Mendelssohn February 3 November 4 ) was a German composer of the early Romantic period. He was perhaps the greatest child prodigy after Mozart Mendelssohn was born in Hamburg , the son of a banker, Abraham, who was himself the son of the famous Jew ish philosopher Moses Mendelssohn . Felix's family, however, converted to Christianity , and moved to Berlin in 1812. His sister was Fanny Mendelssohn (later Fanny Hensel), who was a well known pianist and amateur composer herself. Mendelssohn began taking piano lessons from his mother when he was six, and at seven was tutored by Marie Bigot in Paris Eiffel Tower has become the symbol of Paris throughout the world.
